Seeking startup funds

I'm working with a group that's trying to get a community biolab off the ground.

If you haven't heard of community biolabs such as Biocurious and Genspace, they are places where K-12 students, college students, and other members of the community can learn and practice biology in a safe and inexpensive manner.

We're seeking $3,500 in initial funds (already have $506), and have another 25 days to get it.

The symbol γ

Is anyone familiar with the use of γ as a symbol for a prefix? I've never come across it before, and according to Wikipedia, γ is used for "antibiotic concentration (1 γ = 1 µg/ml) in microbiology."

I tried searching online for other references to this, but anything I found just linked back to Wikipedia. Can anyone link to any other sources? Or do you know if 1 γ = 1 µg/ml only when referring to antibiotic concentration?

I ask because a paper I read for a project uses this symbol to refer to concentrations of glucose used as assay standards. In case you're interested, the paper is: Park, J. T., and M. J. Johnson. 1949. A submicrodetermination of glucose. J. Biol. Chem. 181:149-151.

Thanks

Since...

Since I seem to be getting so much slack for my last questionable post, I guess I better do something to make up for it.

O.k., so here it goes,
how many of you if any of you know anything about "MRSA" "MRSA Super Strains" What are you experinces and knowledge of it?
Also, what are your thoughts and ideas on this last years outbreak of swine flu, or H1N1?

looking for help

Hello magnificent people!!!

I need some help.

Part of my PhD project is to be done here in the USA and it involves petroleum.

The thing is, I don't need a huge amount of it. I mean, a barrel is way too much petroleum for me. So I can't really go out and buy it.

I was wondering if maybe someone has access to a sample of petroleum that he/she is will to share?

I need 300ml of a low density petroleum, hopefully similar to 20 to 23 API grade and hopefully recently drilled. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Ribominus kit stupid problem

Hello dears.

I have the most stupid problem on earth. And the thing is I'm doubing myself.

I'm using the ribominus kit from Invitrogen to deplete my RNA from rRNA. The magnetic bed tha was in the department is broken (don't ask me how, I was told this by the department coordinator as the reason to not let me use it) In my head a magnetic bead is just a fancy magnet. so I was thinking on using a comercial magnet instead. Here is where I have the problem. If the magnet is too strong it may damage the beads, if it is too weak it will be of no use.

so, anyone knows how powerful the magnet needs to be in order to work just right?

help please

Hello.

I am looking for information on the life cycle of phiX174 and/or M13 phages.  Can anyone direct me to interesting papers that would be cool to discuss in class with first year master students?

I have found a few about phiX174 that I think could be useful but are maybe too old.

B A Fane, S Head and M Hayashi from 1992,
S Eisenberg and R Ascarelli from 1981
JOHN F. SCOTT, SHLOMO EISENBERG, LEROY L. BERTSCH, AND ARTHUR KORNBERG  from1977
and SHLOMO EISENBERG, JOHN F. SCOTT, AND ARTHUR KORNBERG from 1976

Does anyone knows of more recent publication on the subject?

Thanks a lot

Advice on FPLC systems

Hi everybody!
We are thinking of getting an FPLC system for our teaching laboratory so that students can learn how to purify proteins. We've narrowed our choices down to either the Bio-Rad BioLogic LP System or the GE Healthcare's AKTA Explorer . Have any of you used either of these two systems, and if so, what did you think of them? Which would you recommend for a teaching lab? Which is better for durability, ease of use, lack of breakdowns and ease of repair or upgrade?

Thanks for any advice you can give me!
