Unexpectedness

I've got music on in the background, and a random political satire song from the Capitol Steps came up. It's from their 1994 album "Stand by your Dan" entitled Gorby Gorbachev. The line that caught my attention was ..."there’s a guy who told that Donald Trump my schedule’s got no room..."

So it seems that the corridors of power know that Trump's been colluding with the Russian's for over 20 years. 😏

Duke'd again!

In the "you need to find something to laugh at so you don't start crying" category:
Duke’s fulmination is clarifying on a variety of points. First, it makes clear that the white supremacist has never actually eaten gefilte fish, because he thinks it’s something someone would want to win in a bet.

Getting rid of double standards

Jordan Klepper investigates why evangelicals think Donald Trump is the best at G-d.

This interview is really good. There’s always a cognitive dissidence where people justify why a person they like did something bad (ex/ this pastor excused Donald Trump being an adulterer) and blaming someone they don’t like for the same thing (ex/ The same pastor says without any irony that it’s Hillary Clinton’s fault that Bill cheated on her.)

That cognitive dissidence is even more disgusting once you realize that it’s not just about praising someone you like, but it’s about making it the woman’s fault that the man can’t keep it in their pants. If Hillary or Ivana were better wives, their husband’s would never have cheated. And if those other women hadn’t tempted Donald and Bill, they wouldn’t have cheated. It’s infantilizing men by saying that they don’t have to be responsible for their actions. Additionally, it demonizes women by saying that they are temptresses that men can’t resist unless they cover themselves up/hide away.

How about we teach all our children to be respectful of each other and to take responsibility for our own actions? I promise you, we’ll create a stronger society when we make everyone responsible for their own self.

Never again

George Takei Pleads With Latino Voters Not to Elect Donald Trump in Powerful Video

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

(no subject)

Sorry, but this new Apple patent could stop you from Snapchatting at concerts

This is dangerous technology. Sure, they talk about using it to block people from recording concerts. However, I can easily see it expanded to blocking people enacting their free speech rights, from recording police actions, etc. If you're from the SF Bay Area, you might recall when the BART police put cell phone blockers in the BART stations to keep protestors from organizing to protest the death of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer.

Dear Rep King, please shut up

Dear Rep King,

I read your remarks earlier in the week regarding 'I don't understand how Jews in America can be Democrats first and Jewish second'.

That's okay. Many people don't understand how Republican's can decry the Senate Democrats refusing to pass a bill to help victims of human trafficking because of the anti-abortion Hyde Amendment in it (What was that Mitch McConnell did? He said that the Democrats are playing politics to hurt women, and then he turns around and holds up the new AG nomination due to those self-same politics. Hypocrite!<1>).

To get back onto the original subject, Netanyahu has gone - as Jon Stewart described in this wonderful piece - "full blown settler". The fact that your end of day revelations require all the Jews to be in Israel in a unified country doesn't mean that all Jews agree. The frum settlers are a blight upon Israel, and the fact that Netanyahu supports them doesn't help him. He's not as much of a war criminal as Ariel Sharon - that man started the second intifada by going to speak at the Temple Mount stating that it would always belong to Israel knowing what would happen - but he's close.

The frum have a disproportionate influence on Jewish life in Israel; kind of like how the Republican party has a disproportionate influence on everyday life in the United States. There's not going to be peace until more moderate voices on both sides start talking with each other, and the other Arab states stop using Israel as their bogey-man to keep their population looking outward as to the source of all their issues. For example, back in 1948, if the Arab states had wanted[2], they could have helped the Palestinian population actually settle into other countries rather than make them permanent refugees. The issues would be vastly different these days if that had happened. Netanyahu isn't helping Israeli security; he's hurting it.

Many Jews are Democrats because they believe in helping people. That's part of the faith. I don't see many in the modern Republican party helping people without bias. Am I being unfair to you? Possibly. But I'm sick of listening to people talk down to minorities of any stripe as if we can't think for ourselves. I don't need you to christinsplain to me why I should vote Republican. I'm quite capable of reading and listening to what your party says, and reject it as being insular and short-sighted.

In conclusion, Rep King, please shut up - and start listening to the very people you're claiming that you want to speak for.

שָׁלוֹם,

Hawk

[1]I like this quote regarding the whole thing the best: Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, called McConnell’s comments “politics at its worst.”

“Opponents of safe and legal abortion are using a bill that was supposed to help women to hurt women and hold up the important Senate business of confirming a well-qualified nominee to serve as Attorney General,”
.

[2]I'm excluding Jordan from this. Both King Hussein's have been pretty stand up mensches considering everything.

Really?

So they're calling this the "Snowquester". *rolls eyes* At least it's marginally better than things like "Snowmaggedon!"

The newest plus side for this extended trip is:
1) I now have 5 days of gym access. It doesn't have the pound weights I need (my PT wants me to go light, light, light), but I've got a treadmill and stepper which is really nice.
2) I did some shopping last night as I didn't bring warm enough clothes for snow (and I brought the pair of jeans that don't really fit, not the ones that fit) and got some warm clothes for fairly cheap. Yay for clearance racks and 15% off!
3) Hugh Chavez died. I know the poor of Venezuela loved him, but he really wasn't good for the country as a whole. I hope that they choose someone who helps them come into the mainstream of world politics, rather than staying on the fringes.

Citizenship test

The Christian Science Monitor has up a US Citizenship Test. I got 5 of 96 questions wrong, with 2 of them being ones that I knew and just clicked the wrong one. I don't know if it was that easy for me because I know the material that well or if it's really that easy.
