TOP POST.

Welcome to my journal!

Wanna be my friend? Wanna have me friend you back? Are you someone who I don't already know? If so, please drop me a note here letting me know who you are, how you found me, and why you decided to friend me.

This journal is friends-only. I don't friend a lot of people. Most of them are people I've known for a good decade, or are friends of friends and have enough interests in common that I trust them. I occasionally talk about personal stuff such as medical issues, personal issues, family issues, work issues, or social issues. Because of this, I don't automatically friend people back. Thus the request for the comment letting me know who you are.

I have stuff to say. I say it. I link it. This should not be considered anything unlike having a conversation in public with friends, where some people may overhear certain things, but where other conversations are shunted off to a special events room. And yes, I do occasionally mutter to myself in the corner.

Sometimes I feel the need to clean house, especially if it seems like I'm passing over entries of people who aren't commenting, and will remove people from my friends list due to that. If you were friended, and really miss reading my entries, feel free to comment below! I'll see about adding you back. :)

Quick friending note

If you're on LJ and DW, and I've recently defriended you, it's probably because I'm mostly crossposting from DW now and you're mostly crossposting from DW now [and it's easier to read you on DW].

If you would prefer I add you back on DW, and you're crossposting both places, just msg me your username and/or add me over there. Same username both places.

If you're only on LJ, no fear! If you're on LJ but want to be able to access my older stuff, just let me know.

[And there are some that I'll read both places just because of how many comments you might get in one place or the other. Just FYI.]

HOTMAIL / WORK account people-- do you have an alternate account?

Just a friendly reminder / suggestion from your local LiveJournal Support volunteer!

Lots of forgotten password / defunct email requests come from people who have their password auto-entered into their system and who have their email address set to a work address. If you get laid off or transferred or whatnot, you won't have access to that email address. If you forget your password, you can only have it sent to the current address on the account or to another email address that had previously been validated on the account.

Lots of other forgotten password / defunct email requests come from people who have not logged in to their Hotmail / Yahoo / whatever accounts for a long time, and whose accounts get closed out. This is especially a problem with Hotmail accounts, because Hotmail recycles email addresses. If you have a Hotmail account that lapses, someone else can request that email address later on! That means that they technically could use it to gain access to your account.

Because of this, LiveJournal won't allow password reset emails to be sent to Hotmail email addresses. If your registered, active email address is a Hotmail address, you can get the password reset email sent to your Hotmail account if you leave the email address blank; LJ's system will automatically send the password reset email to the current address on the account.

However... if your main address was a work address that you can no longer access, and your only previously-validated accessible email address is a Hotmail address, you won't be able to send the password reset email to that Hotmail address!

The only other option that you'd have in these cases would be the Secret Question. Do you have a secret question set? Do you know what it is?

SO:

* Go here: [http://www.livejournal.com/manage/…

- Check to see if you have a secret question set
- See which email address you currently have validated for your account

* Check your other validated email addresses on file here: [http://www.livejournal.com/tools/e…

- If necessary, add a new, more current email address here: [https://www.livejournal.com/change…

* Copy, Paste, and Pass this information on to others who might need it!

(popfiend and paradisacorbasi and sigma7, I know you guys especially have lots of readers who might be interested in this reminder.)

LJ PSA TIME! Keep your email account updated!

It's PSA time again here at LJ!

* Go to [http://www.livejournal.com/manage/…

* YES, go do it right now. Sheesh!

* Check the email address on the account.

* Do you want that to be your email address for your account?

* If so, leave it alone.

* If you need to have a different email address on your account, because the old email is no longer valid, CHANGE IT.

* Keep in mind that you will need to have the new address for 6 months before you'd be able to remove it from your list of validated addresses.

* Keep in mind that you'd need to receive a validation email in order to validate that email and be able to use all of the features of your account.

Remember to always keep an updated email address on all of your internet accounts. Most sites these days will NOT change your password for you and will NOT change your email address for you. They don't want to change it and get sued because some identity hacker made the changes and screwed with settings on your account.

It's *YOUR* job to keep that information up to date! So go check it and make sure it's current.

Love,

kate.
who just did several hours of support consisting mostly of "forgot password, defunct email" requests, and really wants to make sure she never has to answer one of those for you people.
