A declassified World War II-era government guide to “simple sabotage” is currently one of the most popular open source books on the internet. The book, called “Simple Sabotage Field Manual,” was declassified in 2008 by the CIA and “describes ways to train normal people to be purposefully annoying telephone operators, dysfunctional train conductors, befuddling middle managers, blundering factory workers, unruly movie theater patrons, and so on. In other words, teaching people to do their jobs badly.” 

Over the last week, the guide has surged to become the 5th-most-accessed book on Project Gutenberg, an open source repository of free and public domain ebooks. It is also the fifth most popular ebook on the site over the last 30 days, having been accessed nearly 60,000 times over the last month (just behind Romeo and Juliet).

Finland celebrates today 108 years of independence. As a symbol of freedom, thousands of blue-and-white flags flutter from flagpoles across the country. We remember the Finns who fell in wars and the veterans of our conflicts, whose sacrifices have made our freedom possible.

Finland's journey as an independent nation has not been easy. The greatest trials, both before and after independence, have come from the east. History reminds us that the readiness to defend our country and its values must never be allowed to weaken. Independence has been defended with arms and unwavering determination, and it will continue to be defended in the future. Our war veterans have left us a lasting example of courage and selflessness, and thanks to their efforts, our freedom has endured.

It is our duty to honor these memories and this tradition of respect, and to pass them on to future generations.

Happy Independence Day, Finland!

Suomi juhlistaa tänään 108 itsenäisyyden vuottaan. Itsenäisyyden merkiksi siniristiliput hulmuavat lipputangoissa ympäri maan. Muistamme sodissa kaatuneita suomalaisia sekä sotiemme veteraaneja, joiden uhraukset ovat mahdollistaneet vapautemme.

Suomen matka itsenäisenä kansakuntana ei ole ollut helppo. Suurimmat koettelemukset, niin ennen itsenäistymistä kuin sen jälkeen, ovat tulleet idästä. Historia muistuttaa meitä siitä, ettei valmiutta puolustaa omaa maata ja sen arvoja saa koskaan päästää heikkenemään. Itsenäisyyttä on puolustettu asein ja lujalla tahdonvoimalla, ja sitä tullaan puolustamaan myös tulevaisuudessa. Sotiemme veteraanit ovat jättäneet meille pysyvän esimerkin rohkeudesta ja uhrautuvaisuudesta, ja heidän työnsä ansiosta vapaus on säilynyt.

On meidän velvollisuutemme vaalia näitä muistoja ja kunnioituksen perinnettä sekä kuljettaa ne eteenpäin tuleville sukupolville.

Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää, Suomi!
