We spotted a second set of ducklings on the lake! This was somewhat distressing at first because the babies were following mama to the retaining wall, which she flew up onto and they were stuck below.

Beneath all the creative choices with respect to the manga style in sharp contrast to the '95 movie, I think the most unrealistic part of this first episode of the show is that a govt organization would care about some ill-treated orphans who are forced into slave labour whose work feeds into the government. Heck, even Innocence had to setup a high profile murder scene to get the ball rolling in a similar kind of plot. There is a brief conversation about political rivalry between the politician who runs the orphanage and another one, they gloss-over however, it still leaves me hard-pressed to buy into this premise.

That said, what a blast it was in every frame and animation sequence. I'm not particularly rattled by the tone and intricate narrative dissonance (because how can you not have already seen the '95 movie at this point to get a lot of context?), though you have minor issues like the aforementioned stuff.

Godd, i love her hair...

A nice and simple call back to the iconic scene from the movie.

hello! i haven't posted a lot recently, sorry about that ~w~. i wish i could say it's because i'm Super Busy, but it's not; the more correct answer is that i'm Lowkey Depressed. however! i've figured out the secret to hating myself less. it's Doing Things and Going Outside.

i've been kind of nervous to Go Outside recently because of my physical proximity to my ex-friends. like, seriously- i had THREE run-ins with different groups of friends in ONE DAY on my first outing after the school year ended. it's a nightmare. T-T at least my current friends are willing to accommodate me about that, when we hang out we usually take drive thrus and then go a little out of town or just directly to their house. i'm very thankful to them for that.    orz

so i'm basically Going Outside around once a week; Going Outside is different from normal going outside, though. Going Outside is some kind of event where i need to leave my physical location and hang out with someone for a decent period of time. i could probably stand to increase my normal going outside, though. i might start taking walks around my house or using my scooter to get some fresh air. (but last time i used my scooter i very nearly broke my hand! such is the way of life.)

the other component is Doing Things, which tends to either be some kind of craft project or a way to spruce up my current living conditions. my room at home is incredibly messy, and it's been this way basically as long as i can remember. something something neglected as a kid etc. it's very difficult to make it Unmessy right now because i have a bunch of stuff from the dorm that i already have equivalents of at home, and my parents won't let me store the boxes holding those things in a different place temporarily until my room gets to a better condition. (variants of this problem have been happening since i was 12). so the room gets messier and messier...

i try to hack away at it as much as i can, but i find it difficult to retain the motivation to clean unless i have something to listen to. i've been struggling to actually Find something to listen to, so my progress has slowed... but i'd like to get my room livable again soon!

in the meantime, i still have much more motivation for craft projects, which i find much more satisfying to do. i try to have a short-term thing i work at over the course of a few days, and a longer-term thing on the backburner that i work on whenever i have the time/money. my current short-term is a perler sprite of the roaring knight from deltarune! i finished most of it today, and tomorrow i'll be ironing the smaller bits and assembling the whole thing. (the sprite is a bit too big for my current board size...) after i finish with the knight, i'm gonna take another stab at my tenna sprite! i tried doing that one last summer, but i was too busy with rehearsals to finish it (and the initial ironing of the first segment went poorly). i think tenna will probably be my next short-term project!

after tenna and the knight, i think i'm gonna work on styling and collecting things for my itabag! i preordered a deltarune one (I'M AWARE) from fangamer a few months ago, and it arrived 2 or 3 days ago! i'm still trying to figure out who or what will be at the center, but i'm leaning towards it being ralsei. i'll have to see, though!

my longer-term project is a cosplay of ralsei from deltarune. you may have noticed a pattern here. i bought the top half and the bottom half, but the colors were further apart than i had expected. my mom suggested a dyeover of the lighter piece with a darker color to try and get them to match better. i have no guarantees this will work, and i've never dyed anything before, but i figure it's worth a shot! i'm going to be doing that part this weekend. i'll try to update with how that goes!

another project i've been hacking away at slowly is more thorough system documentation. trying to categorize things like which headmates have fit what splitting patterns, what periods of time headmates have split and why, who's interacted with who, etc. it's something we've been meaning to do for a long time, but having a lot of free time means i actually get to do it now. so far the results have been fairly unremarkable, but i expect it to start bearing fruit soon.

that's about all for now!! :]

🏗 (construction) - do "more powerful" spiritual/metaphysical members have more say over the body, the world you go to when not in front, or life you collectively live?

absolutely not . if there is anything that grant anyone more authority over others , that would be amount of time here . even that is not really official sort of power structure , just reminders of how things work and keep newer courtiers in check .

courtlands also have degree of ... sentience may be awkward way to put this ? but by all means if someone was to try and stage coup or raise powers against another , would not just face wrath of courtiers , but also actual courtlands . courtlands can be gracious enough to allow use of powers , dampen for safety , or strip away entirely .

~

đź“– (open book) - if any of your spiritual/metaphysical members come from recognizable places, how do they feel about being known like that? how do they feel about the common public perception of them?

this vary by courtier , where most recognition is through media properties rather than specific figures of folklore .

some want literally nothing to do with public perception or media property reflective of world - quality problem , audience problem , not actually reflect very well , so on .

others would not mind as much , if not for general " fictive problems " such as invasive questions and fannish behaviours . unfortunately do have experience with even other plurals who treat like funny little gay ships , so plural spaces do not necessarily feel any safer .

there is also culture and power around names , of course . difficulty is that in this world , can not reveal much about oneself or world of origin without imply or outright reveal name .

not only is name culturally significant in self , but also enable others to dig into media properties and " discover " things that courtier did not want to make known . some courtiers do not mind this discoverability in theory as long as others still treat respectfully , but some courtiers really hate that , no matter any level of respect - some dislike that even other courtiers may just know things by proxy .

HeartQuest is an early 2000s FUDGE-derived system for shoujo manga-style campaigns. Steel Roses is the expansion that adds mecha. Supposedly it's inspired by Escaflowne, Rayearth, and Sakura Wars, but i got a lot of loose Evangelion vibes from it.

I'm just kinda amused and amazed that this exists. fascinating artifact. who convinced all these writers that mech games need AI rules. why are they Asimov again

roommate texted me thus:

had horrible horrible dream/hallucination last night

half woke up and I “heard” knocking on the window and the voice of fucking (X) from work was saying hey (Roommate) can you unlock the door and I’m like no wtf??? But I was so half asleep i thinn i woke up from deep sleep I couldn’t move I could just shake my head and I’m like oh my god wtf?? and at one point I also thought I heard (P) like repeat what the voice said but obviously that wasn’t real either

Like they had repeated it to make sure I heard it

so fucking creepy. while it might not be a truly "old" house it isn't without its fair share of weird stuff going on. one big creepy experience i had some years ago was visiting my dad before he passed. me and my mom came over because his gf was out of town, and we chatted basically until the sun went down, gave him some things. i think we were there for a few hours, and when we left, it was genuinely the most quiet i have ever experienced. pitch black and dead quiet. going into the garage and then outside and having the TV slowly muffle away, but then stepping outside and the only sound is shoes on gravel. even since, having lived there for like fuck 3 years or something??? (jesus christ) i have not had that happen again. wasn't snowy wasn't really even remarkable in any other way.

sometimes really struggle with look back on journal game projects after completion , like see all of flaws and frustrations left by gaps in language , or mechanics that struggle to fully realise .

but heart of stone is definitely exception to that . this is one of favourites by far . probably because channel all of frustrations with ACOTAR into this ! know quality of story would still be so poor , but definitely did wish tamlin and lucien would hook up instead and feyre could cheer on marriage and bring back blessings for family .

so for sure that game was so nice to write , still love to read back , and really wish could read playthroughs !

Rogan: last night, I had one of those extremely cogent, cinematic, screaming nightmares, but the story annoyed me so much I refuse to make it a real story. Instead, I post it here.

There was a people who lived in a cold green land of forests, hills, and snow. The winters seemed to last forever, and the snow was so heavy that they had built a roofed-over compound where they would retreat for the winter, living safely for months, sealed in by snow. The people had been there a long time. They were happy there.

Then the bat people started appearing.

Alien Waterfalls

When crafting an atmospheric landscape on an alien planet, it's always best to borrow the coolest, most interesting elements found here in the beautiful natural world. As a result, waterfalls tend to pop up fairly frequently.

One of my favorite examples is actually very recent: Michael Böhme's 2019 artwork, "At the Waterfall."

Alien Waterfalls

Böhme also has this undated waterfall, too.

Alien Waterfalls

David A Hardy has the most waterfalls, with this very cool piece, "Mistworld V."

Alien Waterfalls

Here's another one from David A Hardy.

Alien Waterfalls

Tim White's 1976 cover to Not Before Time by John Brunner is worth mentioning (again) for that lush jungle.

Alien Waterfalls

One of Rodney Matthews' most famous posters, “In Search of Forever,” centers on a waterfall bridge.

Alien Waterfalls

A waterfall provides a little visual interest in a Richard Courtney’s 1982 cover art for the Flying Saucers anthology, edited by Isaac Asimov, Martin Harry Greenberg, and Charles G. Waugh.

Alien Waterfalls

Fred Gambino has some examples, alongside a beautiful cantilevered futuristic city, on his 1999 cover for Acorna's Quest by Margaret Ball and Anne McCaffrey.

Alien Waterfalls

David B Mattingly and Danny Flynn also have some nice waterfalls.

I love the sparkles on Rob Burt's 1982 cover art for The Crystal Singer, by Anne McCaffrey.

Alien Waterfalls

Of course, waterfalls don't have to make complete logical sense, if they're appearing in a fantastic setting. I'm not sure where all the water is coming from in this mountaintop fortress by Wojtek Siudmak.

Alien Waterfalls

Maybe it's coming from something like the rock in Bill Martin's 1971 work "Rock," as it appears in the 1977 art book Visions.

Alien Waterfalls
Thanks to Retro Sci-fi Art for this one!

Logic isn't the point in this late-1970s surrealist work from Akira Shishido, either.

Alien Waterfalls

Here's a particularly weird one: The astronauts are floating, but the waterfalls confirm the rest of the planet has gravity. It's Johnny Bruck's August 1995 cover for Perry Rhodan #1775: Kommando Gonozal.

However, Bruck seems to have pulled that particular cave system directly from another painting – one by Angerer the Elder, according to this German webpage.

Alien Waterfalls

I'm not sure how familar Perry Rhodan readers in Germany would have been with Angerer the Elder. Perhaps this was intended to be seen as a riff on the painting.

When it comes to surreal, impossible waterfalls, there's no beating Roger Dean's famous 1972 album art for Close To The Edge, by Yes.

Alien Waterfalls

Dean also has a couple sequel versions, "Close To The Edge II"...

Alien Waterfalls

...and "Close To The Edge III."

Alien Waterfalls

The seemingly endless waterfall at the edge of the world isn't unique to Dean, of course. Here's Peter Lloyd's 1977 album art for Point Of Know Return, by Kansas.

Alien Waterfalls

And here's another variation on the theme – A 2002 personal work by Michael Whelan, "The Fourth Crusade."

Alien Waterfalls

Finally, I love this one by Marco Patrito. Not only is the waterfall endless, but so is the sea in all directions. Now that's alien.

The Art of Cosmic Terror: John Coulthart on Magick, Occult Diagrams and Impossible Cities - RetroFuturista

I link to John Coulthart's blog pretty often. Here's an interview where you can hear about his whole deal, which includes a lot of interesting projects done with Alan Moore.

"Imagined as fiction, presented as fiction, and accepted as fiction" - Metafilter

This blog post lists a ton of fantasy and fairy tale fiction from pre-1800s history, with dozens of links for futher reading.

The most interesting one to me was Mital; ou, Avantures incroyables, a 1708 satire "in which Laurent Bordelon constructs a story out of nonsense details taken from natural histories and at the end provides 70 pages of citations to his sources." I'd love to read a history of satire, if there's a comprehensive one out there.

wake up in bad shape and just feel like get worse , so decide to pull ritual out of ass and just do ... something . not that this was totally meaningless ritual , just kind of cobble together from disjointed thoughts rather than follow anything in specific , because definitely did not feel in shape to follow something elaborate .

good news was that actually help - shake off some pressures and banalities , and spend little bit of time just dick around in rusted moss . not sure if up for much artfight today even so , definitely still need to pace , but at least better than how wake up .

just run through eye of eden today . originally pick up 6-star moth friend , but fear-quit game before big climb . which is fair for new player , but kind of shame . on other hand , kossai like to play eye of eden very ballsy , and new players kind of restrict that . not by any malice of course , just do not want to put in harm's way :P

did meet up with another player though , cool puzzle director ikejou ! help each other through whole storm , and end up as friends :) unfortunately did not get to finish together , kossai was behind , but still nice to have that .

currently at 89 base wing , and now need to actually go through all of winged light run ... ah , well , such is game !

Our oldest computer is a AST laptop from 2000 named Obsolete. It runs Windows 98 and had long since retired from duty, on account of it being so old that it was unable to do much besides run Office 97 and play MS-DOS games. It could read CDs, but not write to them, so data could only exit via floppy or zip disc.

However, it turns out Obsolete is PERFECT for inventorying periodicals at the sci-fi library.

kossai is very visual . there is one bare minimum that need to connect with any given courtier effectively , and that is picture . take concentrated effort to establish hook without picture , and so that is first part of record someone new - if not full picture , then at least description of traits to build one later .

of course courtiers with multiple regular forms can throw spanner , but usually prioritise preferred form , " generic form " that encapsulate most common traits like hair colour or number of fingers , or if practical to do so , include all forms - exact approach is down to courtier preference .

often kossai make these pictures , no harm no foul there . where things can get more dicey is when find random pictures which line up incredibly well with someone . sometimes this picture is specific character , and courtier's identity line up with stated character whether mainstream or niche .

sometimes , identity do not line up , but still look similar enough to adopt picture . even if redraw with that courtier's specific personal quirks , will still look very similar . ( one courtier , for example , use picture of mass-market BJD - only major difference is that add rabbit ears . )

in any case this all pose another good reason for anonymity and non-reveals - people show up and exist regardless . can not just change essence of self to avoid violation , but can avoid public connection and identification . fortunately already prefer that anyway , but real shit predicament for collectives who prefer publicity . risk use of true-to-heart pictures , or come up with some cover form that is less comfortable ?

dream was pretty weird overall with lots of cluttered nonsense , but favourite part was probably how start .

kossai work on film something in which take role as antagonist who steal away and terrorise humans . notably , all of humans' reaction was real , because just create random faerie terror on streets !

this might funnily enough relate to last night in sky cotl , as get drone camera upgrade and immediately decide to cause chaos . unsure if drone camera is visible to other players , but figure probably should be since regular camera is , so yes perhaps did fly camera around just to see what people would do .

rhythm heaven groove...

lowfidelity: the engineer from tf2 sipping coffee and looking at an explosion (engie sipping mug)

... i'm not a very big fan of this entry. there are PIECES of it i absolutely adore; beatspell is a super interesting twist on the usual rhythm toys in each game, and levels like crab snack 2, sneezy moon 2, and wiper bosses are excellent! but i worry that i only like these so much because everything around it kinda sucks. never has a game made me oscillate between "we're so back" and "it's so over" quite as rapidly as this one.

the first FORTY LEVELS are a slog, and then you're only halfway done. so many levels in this game could have been cut with no consequences (or maybe even IMPROVEMENT) to the quality of the game. why did they aim for a benchmark of 80??? barring megamix, every other game has done far better with 50 or fewer, and megamix's minigame number is inflated by ports from other games. and even though every game has a few stinkers, the VAST MAJORITY of each level is decently enjoyable, if not an outright blast to play. this is not the case with rhythm heaven groove. many levels have music unmemorable, and they keep reusing the same synth for so many songs in the first half of the game. it genuinely irritates me so much.

this game needed more time in the oven and less time making sequels to minigames. fever had TWELVE sequels, and each one was better utilized than the vast majority of them have been in groove. as for the sequels that stand out, they stand out because their prequel was obnoxious to play and the new sequel made it actually enjoyable. also, can i just say? there is ZERO good reason to make 20 entire remixes in this game, especially when most of them are middling-poor quality. the majority of the remixes don't offer any of the reskins that have been a consistent tradition since DS/gold (and a thing In General since the first game!). this game did not need to be this big, and now it's bloated.

this game suffers a lot from the biggest problem with megamix; it's assuming most of its players are more incompetent than they are, so the levels slant very easy for the first like 6 stages. this results in a sort of reverse power creep where earlier entries in the series have more difficult entry levels than later ones.

also, oh my GOD the handholding is so annoying. it's like they forgot to code a setting for normal levels to disable the tutorial. there is a tutorial in front of EVERY sequel, even if the sequel doesn't add any new cues or inputs! you are WASTING MY TIME!! not to mention, the levels that do have cues will teach them both before AND after the review sections. if you take a gamble and skip a tutorial for a sequel you haven't played yet, you might skip out on information crucial to the success of the level! it's like this game is designed to waste all of my time.

the "first" levels are ridiculously easy. there is no point to the vast majority of them existing. once i fully finish the game, i'll make a list of every single level i think could have been cut (or maybe i'll just aim for a benchmark of 50 like the other games.)

i'm a veteran of the series, and i've played every game on its original hardware except for tengoku (but i have an original DS that accepts GBA cartridges; it's just a matter of finding a replacement battery and charger for the damn thing. i've emulated it with no problems!). i think it's fair to ask if my complaints are unique to having known the series as well as i do. i honestly have no idea how someone new to the series would respond to these issues, but my best guess is that it would drive them to quit!

an issue that i know for sure is plaguing people new to the series is that many of the audio cues are too quiet, or there are cues that are visual-only without any audio component. this is incredibly embarrassing for the first entry in the series explicitly advertised to be blind-accessible. there are also no audio settings besides enabling the TTS (which is very grating for sighted people and likely at least a little annoying if you're blind), which means there is No fix for the too-quiet cues, and the visual-only cues are genuinely directly against the design ethos of rhythm heaven (which will have been around for 20 years in august).

a LOT of this game goes against the design ethos of rhythm heaven in a Bad Way. i can respect megamix for pushing the envelope and trying new things, even if a lot of them didn't work out (having a main story, Prequel Levels, a map you have to flip through the pages of instead of every level on one screen). there were interesting new choices that were made (challenge train stuff, bonus levels unlockable through rewards for perfect levels) that had potential to carry onward into the series. but it seems like groove took all the wrong lessons from megamix; prequel levels now make up roughly half of the game's 80 (!!! RIDICULOUS NUMBER!!!) minigames, the levels take up multiple pages you need to flip through (due to the, again, stupidly inflated minigame amount), and it is SO handholdy.

oh well. if i'm really so dedicated to being a miserable wretch, i could play literally any other game in the series!
