Plushie Companion

Just thought folks might want to know that Build A Bear has released what might as well be a plushie Companion, in the form of their Blingy Pony--a white pony with blue eyes and silver fabric hooves! I got one yesterday (the character of Herald-Trainee Finny in Redoubt is based upon me, so naturally I need a plushie Companion), and she's absolutely amazing!

Fanfiction Update

I was on Mercedes Lackey's site the other day and came across the following paragraph on the news page:

"News: Concerning Fanfiction:

As you folks already know, my agent, Russel Galen, has in the past been opposed to fanfiction. However, he is also Cory Doctorow's agent now, and Cory is a persuasive little gnome.

As a result of this, I am happy to announce that we are officially permitting fanfiction to be licensed as derivative fiction under the Creative Commons umbrella.

What this means is: NO, you cannot make money on it. NO, you cannot self-publish a fanfiction novel of Valdemar (or any of my other stuff) and try and sell it on Amazon. And NO, I still am not going to read it, because I am already so far behind on my research reading I barely have time to read that.

But YES, you may write and post away, folks, so long as you license it as derivative and under Creative Commons. If it is anything other than PG-13, please take all the proper precautions to stick it somewhere that innocent souls won't be corrupted. Do not scare the children or the horses. Have fun!"

I figured that might be of interest to some folks; I know it was to me!

Another Review

Read the second book, Magic's Promise.

It seems that no one's posted since my last book review, so just scroll down to see my feelings on Magic's Pawn. To sum up, Magic's Pawn was the first Lackey book I'd ever read. Given her reputation and popularity I was actually disappointed. I found her writing hurried, almost lazy, relying almost entirely on exposition with characters standing around talking about what the characters were like rather than constructing actual scenes with the characters that would SHOW us what they were like. I found it especially frustrating because I actually liked the stories and characters and would have liked a fuller, richer experience with them rather one just comprised heavily of second hand information and other character's observations of things we never got to see for ourselves.

Starting Magic's Price this week.

I've also ordered The Black Swan. I love Swan Lake so I thought it sounded fun.

Book Review

Magic's Pawn, Mercedes Lackey

Collapse )

So, that was my opinion of the first Mercedes Lackey book I've ever read. I'm definitely going to finish the Last Herald Mage Trilogy and then go from there if I want to keep reading her stuff.

Oh, and no spoilers for the other books desired, please.

hackers

Just wanted to tell everyone to be careful. People are getting hacked, so if you see anything with links saying that I closed this community, or anything else that you don't think is legit. DON'T CLICK IT.

It's a very real possibility that this comm will be hacked, as I got on earlier today, and had an e-mail notification saying that my e-mail address was changed, when I did not change it.

So, just a warning to everyone to be very careful.

Mod

I just wanted to let you all know that we have another Mod in the form of lotiel_vanya. I'm also remaining one of the mods for the time being, but I'm sure that that is likely to change sometime soon.

This was done because I don't have time to devote to the community as I have a demanding part-time job, for the summer, and I seem to be spending all of my time there. And because I'll be returning to college in the fall, and won't have time to do much of anything any more, especially since I'll be keeping that job.

Fortunes fool

I just recently read the newest Five Hundred Kingdoms book, Fortunes Fool. It was very good I couldn't put it down, and there were appearances/mentions of characters from the previous books. The strong characters and the sneaky ways they get around the tradition makes this book the best Five Hundred Kingdoms book so far in my opinion.
