Props... .
Today I attended the first day of Otafest, a local anime con, with the husband. Fantastic con, but there was one little hiccup.
I'm legally blind. I have a CNIB card. I also use a white cane.
At all the conventions I've ever been to, all props (swords, staffs, guns, etc.) need to go through prop and/or weapons check, at which time they are marked or peacebonded, generally in a very visible manner, so that fellow con goers, as well as con staff and volunteers, know that the props are allowed in the event space. Wheelchairs, crutches, and other disability-related items, however, do not generally undergo prop check.
Today, for the first time ever, my white cane did.
Now, there are some characters who usewhite canes. Matt Merdock, from Dare Devil, is one. Apparently, and more relevently in this case, so do certain Homestuck characters. Therefore, my white cane had to have a yellow ribbon tied around the handle (which made it difficult to use correctly).
The prop check person who insisted upon this was nice, and I did not want to annoy him, so I allowed him to do so. I can't help but feel rather offended, though, that my legitimate accessability device, and my legitimate need for said device, could be mistaken for a prop and playacting by any congoer who spots that telltale yellow ribbon.
Particularly when I noticed several Homestuck cosplayers wandering about without yellow ribbons on theirwhite canes.
