See, my brother-in-law decided to get into this World-Of-Warcraft thing he heard so much about. Not being one to do things by halves, he went out and got himself the Battlechest (which includes Burning Crusade and the Brady Guides for both) AND Wrath of the Lich King AND the WOW Atlas.

...and then he discovered that his roomate tended to monopolize thier shared computer to the point where it really wasn't worth his time.

At this point (I assume; it's the only motive that makes sense to ME) he remembered that he hadn't given his brother and sister-in law anything for christmas, because he'd been broke at the time.

...I think you guys can see where this is going.

I apologize for continually cluttering up this lj with fic-related posts, but I really am starting to feel like nobody reads lady_smith.

During my review of Voyage of the Damned I mentioned that I consider both Astrid and Lynda companions for very similar reasons and that I would expound on this later.

NOTE: For the purposes of this essay, I'm only looking at the "on screen" companions - those from the series and TV movie. My reasons are not academic snobbery but practicality: I'm not familiar with the books, comics, or Audio plays, and so can't speak to the companions therein - though I'm sure there's a great many there who still fit under the criteria I state here. I'd also like to add the caveat that I'm working purely from memory here - so if I get some of my details slightly off, please forgive me.

Perhaps at the end of the day, what makes a companion is not found in the action of answering the call, but in the strength of heart that makes them answer the call.

Conversations With Liza, and Beta Reader's Filter Poll 2,0

...why is it all my conversations with myself involve the phrase "shut up and let me write"? ...wait, don't answer that.

Anyway, I actually wanted to post to bring you this poll. See, I was going over the results of the Beta Readers Filter poll I posted a couple days ago, and I noticed something odd: quite a few people said they wanted to be on a filter for another fandom I write but forgot to mention, but nobody specified what that was. And since I had a separate option for "all/miscellaneous", people who clicked that must have had a specific option in mind. Thus, this poll:

You may have noticed how ludicrously completest that thing is. I thought of every fandom I could, and went "could I ever see myself writing this? Ever?" in addition to putting down everything I've ever written in and ALL my WIPs and plotbunnies. The resultant list is more than a little scary. And I still have the nagging feeling I'm forgetting some.

Anyway, please note that if you answer any of the first three, I will assume that you DO want to be added to my beta-reader's filter, at least for the fandom(s) in question, so if you don't like your fiction underdone, don't vote!
