While this film made me cry and was a well done adaptation, it didn’t resonate with me fully. I loved the distant and high angled shots and the understated tone, but also found myself feeling like the story was both a bit dull and a bit rushed. They had an impossible amount of backstory to cover to make the pivotal parts of the story emotionally resonant, but those establishing scenes felt just like that: backstory— of which there was somehow…

sexy. then unsexy. then sexy. then deeply unsexy once again. an incredible contemplation of mortality, the aging body, love versus control versus lust, and the lie of “forever.” great performances from sarandon, bowie, and deneuve with such elegant and gothic styling. admittedly the pacing was a little uneven and sometimes style seemed prioritized over comprehensibility. but a great vampire movie overall.

Also somehow this is the second film in a row i’ve seen about blood thirsty lovers in the 80s…
