Kinda goes to shit in the third act. There’s a fade to black at a critical juncture that would note that the intervening scenes didn’t work for shit but they mess up the rhythm going into the ending.
Also, I want to see this story where ol’ Dennis isn’t the perfect dad and husband and little Johnny has a chance to let his dad know how he fucked up when he was a kid. This was definitely written by a boomer.
Holy balls! It starts off promising and Irene Dunne is a charmer, but man, Melvin Douglas' character (and I can't just look at it through the "it was the 30s lens) is such a profound creep and asshole in it. If I gave the plot points without the context that this was a screwball comedy, he'd sound like a serial killer.
Theodora does eventually go off the rails and so does the movie. I love me some screwball comedies, but while there was some very funny stuff and some still timely commentary, the end just left me feeling cold.
