JUNIMATION I

When this anime was released in theaters, I wanted to go see it. Unfortunately, it came out at exactly the time when I had stopped watching movies.
I ended up watching it later when it was released online, and as I mentioned above, that was during a period when I had largely lost interest in movies, so I wasn't very engaged while watching it.

Now I've finally rewatched it, and honestly, I still don't like it that much.…

Beau Travail
Watched

Beau Travail is a film in which Claire Denis deliberately avoids direct explanations. The story unfolds through small details, glances, gestures, landscapes, and seemingly insignificant objects. The plot itself often takes a back seat to the atmosphere, the scorching desert, the repetitive routines of the legionnaires, and their almost ritualistic training exercises.

Denis closely observes masculine strength and discipline, yet she also reveals the vulnerability and emotional depth hidden beneath the surface. As a result, these tough soldiers appear not…

Still Walking
★★★½ Watched

Japan is a country where nostalgia feels embedded in everyday life. Perhaps that's why so many Japanese films feel so special.
Still Walking is imbued with freshness and warmth , paying close attention to the small, ordinary moments from which life is made.

The Graduate
★★★★ Liked Rewatched

After watching Play Misty for Me (1971) , I decided to check out another New Hollywood film, and my choice was to rewatch The Graduate.

Ben has spent his entire life following a path laid out for him. He excelled in school, met everyone's expectations, but the moment he is given the freedom to choose for himself, it becomes clear that he has no idea what he actually wants.

What I liked most is how the film contrasts its characters.…

Play Misty for Me
Watched

New Hollywood was a period of creative freedom when directors freely experimented with genres. This film fits perfectly into that movement, with its modest budget, on-location shooting, and distinctive jazz atmosphere.

Eastwood's directorial debut is rather clumsy, however. The strange decision to pause the story halfway through for an extended jazz festival sequence seriously disrupts the film's pacing. Jessica Walter delivers a genuinely strong performance, and whenever her character disappears for an extended period, the film noticeably loses much of its impact.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Watched

This is a classic grindhouse attraction packed with crazy, over-the-top ideas. The best thing about it is the bright, incredibly detailed clown designs, their costumes, and the practical effects.
It’s funny how the movie takes the premise of alien clowns and turns the entire film into one big chaotic circus.
Unfortunately, even though a lot of weird stuff happens, I feel like I’ll forget this movie pretty quickly.

We're the Millers
★★★½ Rewatched

After watching Colossal , I was scrolling through Jason Sudeikis filmography and saw We’re the Millers, so I decided to rewatch it immediately.
And honestly, even on rewatch, this movie is still really cringe... but in the best possible way.

Colossal
Watched

In Colossal people’s destructive behavior literally materializes in the form of giant monsters destroying Seoul. It’s a clever and visually striking metaphor that immediately grabs you.

Unfortunately, the film doesn’t fully live up to this idea. The first half does a strong job building a story about alcoholism and self-destruction through the main character, Gloria. The monster appears exactly when she drinks and perfectly symbolizes the chaos she brings into her own life and the lives of others.
However, in…

The Poughkeepsie Tapes
★★ Watched

Looks like my dark movie binge is still going strong.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a mockumentary about a serial killer who recorded all of his crimes on video. The documentary-style atmosphere is done well, the interviews with police, profilers, and victims’ relatives feel convincing.
I also really liked the film’s imagery. There are many strong shots, dozens of VHS tapes laid out on a table, the killer in a black suit and mask crawling across the floor while the terrified…

Keane
Watched

I’ve been on a bit of a dark movie binge these past few days. Funny enough, right before this I was watching the second season of Grand Blue.

I have to say, Keane didn’t really work for me. I just couldn’t get interested in watching a depressed man wandering around bleak, boring parts of America. I understand what the film is going for, by observing the character’s grief and suffering, you’re supposed to deeply feel his pain over losing his…
