Obsession
★★★½ Watched

Unfortunately, I really couldn’t see in Obsession what the rest of the world seems to have discovered. The film is beautifully shot and, especially in the second half, veers into incredibly effective horror—which is very impressive for a debut film with a budget that’s rather modest by Hollywood standards.

Nevertheless, I was really put off by how similar the premise is to Get Out. Both films ultimately take the concept in different directions, and—especially when it comes to symbolism—they pursue…

Backrooms
★★★★ Watched

To be honest, Backrooms is probably one of the hardest cinematic experiences I’ve ever had to categorize, and it’s really difficult for me to talk about it without spoilers. Still, I’m going to give it a try here, since I definitely need to see this film at least one more time in the theater, and then I might be able to delve deeper into the points I’d like to elaborate on in a future review.

Backrooms has to strike a…

Until Dawn
★★★ Rewatched

The stupidity of some moments and the incredibly flat dialogue stung a little more on second viewing, yet I still had a lot of fun. There probably just wouldn't have been a way to adapt Until Dawn satisfactorily, and even though this feels, to some extent, like nothing more than fan service, it's still kind of a guilty pleasure for me. I really don’t know how much this would give someone who doesn’t love the source material as much as I do, though.

Supergirl
★★½ Watched

Even in the first film of James Gunn’s new DC cinematic universe, Superman—which many hail as one of the best superhero movies ever—I actually found the plot rather generic and not very exciting. There, however, the whole story was told in a slightly more charming way and, at least visually, had something quite unique about it.

In Supergirl, these positive elements have now essentially been discarded, and we’re left with an insanely overloaded story that gets lost stylistically in the…

Disclosure Day
★★ Watched

Disclosure Day actually starts off quite gripping in the first hour, particularly with a pacing that immediately draws you into the narrative, which begins as a paranoid chase thriller.

What quickly becomes its downfall, however, is how predictable it ultimately turns out to be; everything builds up to a turning point that you can foresee from the very first second, which is then, unfortunately, not developed creatively any further and drags on for the last 80 minutes without any surprises,…

The Furious
★★★★½ Watched

I can actually hardly put into words what I just witnessed on the big screen, but I think we could pretty much leave it at that—it’s a prime example of action cinema.

The Furious is choreographed in a similarly dance-like and unrealistic way as the John Wick movies, but it’s so much more raw; the camera work is more dynamic, and every punch, kick, and headbutt is palpable rather than drowned out by the din. Nevertheless, the characters can take…
