Another brilliant movie, like Speed Racer, that was failed by most critics.  It came out in 2006, which as a lot of people have noted makes it very prescient, but also further supports my contention that something happened around 2010 that caused American cinema to undergo a precipitous decline, because no one is even trying to make stuff like this anymore.

The “professional” film critics who savaged or shrugged off this movie when it came out should be ashamed of themselves.  Yes, it’s bad that publications that have full time staff who write about movies don’t exist anymore, but how many of those people were clowns who didn’t know the first fucking thing about cinema or art?  

Two brief observations about the movie itself, although there is so much more to say: first, the theme of utopian symbiosis between humans…

It’s good, but on this rewatch I found myself being less impressed.  There’s a freakshow aspect to the tone of this film that reminded me of Harmony Korine, which helps me understand why Herzog was such an enthusiastic early booster of Korine’s stuff like Gummo. This time around I noticed the funny parts more, but to the film’s detriment.  The humour is almost Monthy Python-esque at times, but then we get the cosmic musical score coming in to punctuate…what?
