I don't know if a children's film has ever reached such a successful mix between whimsy and lurking horror as this one. The directorial shift worked wonders following book 2: Columbus to Cuarón (I still don't know how they managed to get him). This one offers such a shadowy and distinct look - carries over the silly facets from the first 2 but dives deep into some of the darkest corners that inhabit the wizarding world. Seeing in full that…

Caché

Historical violence positioned as an afterthought, hidden in spaces where many are unaware. plays out with a heavy subtext of national guilt - an inability to escape their rotten past: swept under the rug, you could say. Distilled into a single character, someone who experiences numerous forced confrontations over his own horrific history for which he feels so much shame but will never address. Kinetic and ragged, a display of a world long gone, with plenty of finely carved virtual video game-like spaces. A showcase of true turmoil. The classic survivalist characteristics reign supreme, more of a return to true Resident Evil-form in that sense. The shot of the shattered Hollywood sign is pretty wonderful. Much better than the previous 2. Shoutout Michael Scofield too - feel like it’s been a while!

For me the sun rises and sets with her, man.

Nothing else like it: it’s absolute dynamite. The most romantic film ever made.

probably yorgos’ funniest effort. Love me a dark satire that exposes our times many flaws. conspiracies motivated by corporate caused pain, and the everlasting rage towards people in opposing classes. How easy it is to be convinced when in a vulnerable position, and how far people will go to convince themselves that their worldview is the correct one. It feels truly one-of-a-kind, very uniquely Yorgos in the best manner possible. Nasty from beginning to end. lot to think about right now. On second viewing, this could end up being my favourite of his.
