It’s easy to forget how unhinged the mythology of this movie gets. There’s the top layer of Santa and the Elves and all that, and based on that, it’s a bit like Miracle on 34th Street or The Santa Clause, in which the supernatural guy is the one odd element in a world that seems otherwise normal.

The transfer on the newly-released Blu-ray is tremendous, with Alf looking better than he ever has. One wouldn't think that they would shoot a notoriously mediocre TV movie on film in the '90s, but they apparently did, and the result is a movie that looks cleaner and more impressive than any of the TV show DVDs based on the character to date.
In terms of the movie? There isn't much to it. An alien-hating general wants to kill ALF, so…
