There’s something really special about watching someone who has the confidence to go for it. Most of us can’t get over the trepidation and it is simply much easier to hide behind a facade or settle your sights to more achievable goals. You don’t have the opportunity to see what you can fully realize, but at least you aren’t opening yourself up to that ultimate level of scrutiny — from others, or yourself.

This mostly looks quite good — the costuming and cinematography in particular. A few of the visual effects are lacking, though.

I’m out on almost all of the other major filmmaking decisions. I don’t love the Oscar Isaac or Mia Goth performances, although I could live with them if the rest worked.

Unfortunately, GDT’s empathy for his monsters creates a fundamental flaw. His creature is completely innocent because he can’t bear to let his creation wreak havoc unprovoked. It’s a…

Very cool that a 20 year old made this and it’s so clear he’s got a bright future. I just love that Renate Reinsve and Chiwetal Ejiofor decided to take the chance to do this movie.

Still, this is a feat for any debut but particularly impressive for a guy this young.

Just like…

I don’t think I would have ever asked for Director Bong to make a spiritual successor to Okja with his blank check movie, but this was a great time at the theaters. The two big complaints are the exposition dump in the beginning and uneven performances outside of Pattinson and Ackie. The metaphors are certainly on the nose throughout, but that didn’t bother me too much. I think Pattinson’s made for this type of black comedy and he carried so much of the burden.
