I’ve avoided watching this for a while now, I grew up in Denver with an intense interest in poetry and Andrea was a major early hero for me. I went to all of their writing workshops throughout my high school years and have always been grateful for how they treated everyone (including their little gay 14 year old fans) with such kindness and attention and dignity. in spite of my avoidance I am so glad that this film was made and found it to be an incredibly beautiful portrait of someone who meant the world to me during a confusing and formative period of my life
Now that the embargo from the premiere has lifted lol…. Garland’s work has historically suffered from ambitious conceptual statements being reduced to predictable plot devices and overused imagery. This was the opposite of that. I guess I could generously call the imagery ambitious (rather than shock jock) but it was hinged on a hollow premise and a plot that barely gestured towards wider meaning. Impressive performances from Rory Kinnear, but it all would have been easier to take seriously had he been given a stronger script.
Garland half apologized to the audience before the screening and was defensive and pained during the Q&A. Uncomfortable experience
