The Lobster

the only thing this has going for it is the dystopian setting. there’s no plot, so the characters are nothing but a vehicle for world building.

“i wouldn’t change a thing.”

that was when i knew i hated the salt path with a passion.

according to this movie, being made homeless is worth it, because you’re “free” and you get the chance to discover who you really are. i’m glad that was their experience, but the movie shows no sign of recognising what a privileged narrative that is.

when i was made homeless at 17 years old, and again at 19, maybe i should’ve felt free!…

i have never seen a movie more emblematic of the male gaze. every scene is designed to titillate, right from the opening few seconds where we cannot discern sounds of pleasure from those of pain. unlike la pianiste, this isn’t about huppert’s character at all; when it comes to repressed desires, it’s firmly about those of the male viewer. an image is a powerful thing, and no amount of theory will take away from the dangerous ones created here.
