Fritz Lang returns to the spy genre with a noir aesthetic and historical backdrop. The film starts off at a solid pace but quickly loses itself in a bland romance with zero chemistry, sidelining the already thinly developed sense of danger. While the noir style is typically well done, it fails to build any tension, nor does it offer any meaningful engagement with its historical context.

Fritz Lang #20

The historical context, set during World War II, is interesting, and the film, directed by Fritz Lang in 1943, features some striking imagery, especially towards the end (such as the city montage paired with the music or the execution scene). Unfortunately, it’s too long and attempts to present an exciting cat-and-mouse game reminiscent of early Fritz Lang films, but it doesn’t quite measure up to those predecessors. The intended tension never fully materializes, though the story and ending come together well. That said, the portrayal of the occupied city and the cinematography are really compelling, making the film worthwhile as a one-time watch.

Fritz Lang #19

Fritz Lang’s second Western, this time on a grander scale, featuring more conventional shots, including some striking nature imagery. The finale is solid and adds a bit of excitement to an otherwise uneventful story. While the film’s focus on the technological "conquest" of nature is a nice touch, the film itself remains rather forgettable.
