Flaming Star
★★★½ Watched

Barely feels like an Elvis movie at all. Don Siegel strips away the musical persona and uses Presley’s screen presence to turn him into a man trapped between worlds, isolated from both white settlers and his Kiowa family as violence closes in around him. The film’s politics are still tied to the limitations of its era, but it’s tougher and more honest than most “message” westerns, treating racism as something built into the frontier itself rather than a problem one…

Obsession
★★★★ Rewatched

What makes the film effective is how completely it traps us inside Bear’s warped perspective. Nikki is rarely allowed definition outside his gaze, reinforcing the point that he never truly saw her as a person to begin with. Some viewers seem to want the film to step outside his perspective to provide clearer moral accounting, but the horror works precisely because it doesn’t. The discomfort comes from being aligned with someone pathetic and recognizable while watching the cruelty and entitlement…

Meredith’s effects and artwork feed perfectly into each other. His drawings linger, and the practical moments hit with some truly gnarly imagery worthy of the great vintage SOV horror flicks of the early 90s. The story is tight, spooky, and full of small-town legend energy. Pacing is sharp; packs a full feature’s worth of punch in under an hour.

George A. Romero's Resident Evil
★★★ Watched

Because this turned into such a loving tribute to Romero, I bumped it up half a star. Almost no other filmmaker do I feel such a kinship than George, but as a doc this is...fine? It's very much here-say with no one involved in the process or making of this Resident Evil movie actually a talking head.
