Showed this to my friends who had never seen it, and one had a dream the next night that he was exploring Aquatica. While I know there are parts of this movie that are of questionable quality, I think the setting is absolutely not one of them. There is something so entrancing about the way they depict this doomed laboratory, fill it with memorable characters, and let the mayhem that unfolds further the environmental storytelling.
But also big smart sharks eat people yayy.
First time watch, this has been one of my blind spots in horror for ages. Not knowing much about it helped and I liked how it was mainly a courtroom drama, felt like a unique idea for a horror movie. But the actual horror moments were really lacking for me and it overall felt very slow.
Jennifer Carpenter is also one of those actors I have an irrational dislike of so discovering she is the titular character hurt this a lot. But at least Laura Linney was there too.
Nightmarish and hopeful and deeply sad and quietly euphoric all at once. David is a genuine inspiration. What a life.
It is so amazing to me that we as humans can look at a story that’s been told a million times over (the monkeys paw) and breathe life into it to create something completely new. Curry Barker is an instant new fav horror creator with this one.
I loved this. It’s funny, savage, constantly stress inducing and ultimately very clever. It sits firmly in the camp of modern horror movies who are very clearly About Something, but it delivers its message with style and through insanely well acted lead performances.
I want to see it again immediately.
