The Color Purple is a deeply emotional and at times devastating journey following the character of Celie through life's struggles and turmoil. It is an undeniably humane film with really nuanced performances front and centre from Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.

I liked how the film was visually polished, containing some extremely resonant moments. However, I felt the writing didn't capture the full complexity of the story it adapts. Some of the characters felt mildly underdeveloped, lacking the depth needed…

I think it is safe to admit that I (like many others) found this to be absolutely bizarre and a little conflicting on the whole.

I really enjoyed the first hour - the simplicity of a story featuring two sadistic young men torturing a family on vacation. The way the story is built to be deliberately uncomfortable and honestly brutal at points, so it is understandable where this gets its reputation from.

I think the second hour kind of ruins…
