There are very charming and whimsical moments- I loved everything that was set up in the first 30 minutes of the movie- but the movie slowly gets degraded through thoughtless editing, rehashed Mary Poppins whimsy and a badass but also weirdly sexist finale. Yay for punching Nazis i guess?? Too bad it ended up in the lobotomization of Mrs. Pierce.
Despite how much I complain about this movie, I think it was still very creative. The final battle is really, really fun, and unironically I think this movie had a big influence on Harry Potter and Mary Poppins 2 .
why is this movie the Rosetta Stone of modern film
Now that the Wicked film saga is over, I can confidently say that John Chu made a faithful adaptation of the musical: part ( aka Act ) 1 was fun, punchy and heartfelt, with part 2 being a confused mess.
For a movie whose thesis is being “changed for good”, it did not change its source material in a way significant enough to make it good.
Similar to Elphaba’s plight, this movie had all this power, yet it backfired and…
