I guess the way to convince us the fairly dumb main character is as smart as everyone on screen keeps telling us is to make everyone around him somehow more stupid. I guess the wild part is most of it seems true enough, and people seemed to like him. Sadly, it was genuinely difficult to root for a guy who, on screen at least, didn’t really seem to care about the consequences of his actions that much.

I have a hatred of dumb movies taking themselves seriously, it’s just a pairing that drives me mad. Usually anything involving government agencies while seeing the protagonist somehow survive an assault by an entire military falls under this category… yes, even that spy franchise that’s been running decades that I haven’t been able to enjoy since the 80s. I like my smart movies smart, and my dumb movies dumb.

Coming-of-age dramas often sit among my favourite films. I'm not sure which I prefer - the ones that I can relate to, echoing my own emotions through my teenage years, or the ones that are vastly different, where I see nothing in common with my own life. 'Mud' sits very clearly in that second camp.
