CITERION COLLECTION #2

This gets better with every watch. Considered by many to be Kurosawa's best film, although I'd argue for Ran, either way it's a must see. With a run time of nearly 3 and a half hours and never a dull moment, Kurosawa grabs you from the beginning and never let's go. Highly influential. often remade, and a master class on film making. Seven Samurai tops many best of film lists and it never disappoints.

Fans of the original novel, like myself, may find themselves scratching their heads at some of the curious choices made in director Sophie Barthes’ adaptation of Madame Bovary. The film, while beautifully shot, misses the mark by failing to capture the novel’s intent. Why were so many important scenes changed or removed from the book? No ball scene, no theater scene, no daughter, and the brutal death scene is softened. The performances are adequate, although Mia Wasikowska as Madame Bovary…

Madame Bovary

I checked this out after recently reading the novel. Overall, it's very good and faithful to the book. Isabelle Huppert was wonderful as Madame Bovary. Director Claude Chabrol’s version felt more like an episode of Masterpiece Theatre than a film, but that’s not really a bad thing. The film takes its time with the story, much like the novel, but for some reason rushes through the ending. I would have liked the final act to slow down a bit more. Still, a faithful adaptation worth watching for fans of the novel.

Clearly well made, and Timothée Chalamet and the rest of the cast are great. I’m just not sure it earns the ending it chose. I understand what the film was going for — I’m just not entirely convinced it succeeded. I’ll have to sit with this one a bit longer, and that’s a good thing for a movie to make you want to do.

F1 is the best Tom Cruise movie without Tom Cruise I have ever seen. I can only assume there was a scheduling conflict. The racing scenes, thanks to impressive camera work and sound design, are genuinely thrilling. The script, on the other hand, is so paint by numbers that it checks every cliché in the book.

An impressive cast helps somewhat. Most of them are…
