I love Noah Baumbach films, so this was pure catnip. I loved everything about it. The playful and sharp rhythm of the dialogue, especially in the train sequence. The Fellini-esque flashbacks and the way they transition through practical sets. The lush warmth of the score. Clooney’s white suit as he runs in a misty forest. This film has a real love and nostalgia for Old Hollywood that matches my own

I haven’t really connected with an Ari Aster film until this one, and I think it’s because this movie is actually about something relatable. Making an overt satire of COVID and political division is a tall order, but Aster really goes for it. It’s so funny, dark, and recognizable to how we all went stir-crazy during quarantine. It’s time to hold a mirror up to that moment and laugh about it. I think about the last shot a lot.
