“Cel, here’s a doc that covers Anglo phrenology, the TikTok manosphere, incel culture, father-son legacy/identity politics and distrust of the dental industry”
all in a sleepy A24 documentary on Netflix…I would not have believed you. With a ukelele conspiratorial tune to float it through and Martin Luther cosplay to boot? You gotta be shitting me.
A deeper foray by Schoenbrun into intertextuality; imprinting oneself onto fiction; the reliability of memory; transness as a closeted person, an open person and its effects on the passage of time.
Also, a love letter to 90’s fantasy adventure shows a la Buffy and Charmed. I was enchanted by everything in this film: soundtrack, sound design, acting, makeup—the works.
