there are some movies that live up to the hype, and there are some movies that blow the hype out of the water and you wonder "how the fuck did this not revolutionize cinema for the next 20 years???"

This is the latter--my GOD what a movie, Spike Lee is a genius for this. I've always had this as an embarrassing blind spot, so shoutout to my bud Michael for encouraging me to finally watch it. And it could not…

The first Kurosawa movie that I've loved. I've only seen Rashomon and The Hidden Fortress besides this. Fantastic movie. Incredibly sophisticated and literary, technically stunning, and very, very layered.

You could straight read this as a reactionary/conservative detective piece. It's got some of those tropes--probably existing at the time but I associate them with the 80s/90s buddy cop stuff more. There's the anxious young detective, passionate, overly caring about his work, idealistic, working himself to the bone. And then you…

extraordinarily grim and violent and dour for a HK movie. I don't think it fully works as well as it should. They're clearly trying to do a The Dirty Dozen style movie, but the characterization is not there, as they're trying to fit it within the confines of a tight HK action/martial arts thing. So it's tonally off and missing stuff.

I appreciate the attempt, but I think they should have lightened it or darkened it (hard to do in…

TREMENDOUS! Watched this because someone left a comment about being able to see dong in this, but then found out it has Ida Lupino/John Garfield/Thomas Mitchell/John Qualen, directed by Anatole Litvak (The Snake Pit), cinematography by James Wong Howe (!), and this was just so much fun. John Garfield is doing a crazy performance, but this is a really heartwarming story of a Working Class Gay Couple getting one over. Lotta heat buildup by Garfield and wonderfully subversive by Mitchell/Qualen.…

probably the single most irresponsible and objectionable movie I've seen since Triumph of the Will or Crimes & Misdemeanors. might as well be called Sandy Hook Aids Jabber. a movie that could be written by full-post-breakdown Joe Cross or Dawn from Eddington. i cannot fathom how you make this dogshit of a movie after everything that's gone on in this country for the last 25-50 years lol.

a movie we deserve, because this is a country that hates--HATES--children. the biggest scandal…

solid and nice and Boots does his thing. I can't help but have a fondness for him getting to make movies. Politically, I mean, that's easily explainable, but there's also a kind of weird Eastern European style thing he's got going on that I just kinda personally love.

Like, gun to my head, if you asked me the closest thing to this, I would say Oldřich Lipský with Adela Has Not Had Supper Yet, or like Little Otik, or Kin-Dza-Dza,…
