Giving this a second shot, I was once again impressed by its formal choices, its cinematography, its production design, and its overall dread.

But when it comes to the actual story of internal religious conflict, I felt left out. The one-on-one dialogue considering matters of faith leave me wanting to read rather than watch. Maybe then I’d have the patience and time to consider them more deeply. 

My only hope here was Sandrine Bonnaire; anytime she’s on screen, i felt drawn in and engaged. Without her, i felt listless.

Full speed carnival tilt-a-whirl with its own unrelenting brass band. There’s a sense of Fellini taking over Apocalypse Now if Coppola had tossed in the towel.

The first hour’s absurdist slapstick played against the backdrop of war took time to synch up with. But by the time the movie pivoted from WWII to the Cold War aftermath and beyond, I felt fully settled into its madness.
