The Napa Boys

Wet Hot American Sideways

Very silly, extremely stupid, randomly disgusting and (intentionally) all over the place tonally, I screamed “WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!” out loud multiple times. There was no one else around. Just me. That’s the effect The Napa Boys had on me. I still don’t know what the fuck this is but I laughed a lot.

Directors cut

I had not watched this since it came out in 2005 and had never watched the directors cut. I did not think much of it at the time and didn’t remember a thing. So it’s hard for me to say that the directors cut is far superior or if I am simply more open to this kind of movie now than I was back then. Either way, I really enjoyed this viewing. Ridley is great with scale, the…

This movie blew me away when I saw it in the theater. I had no idea what I was in store for and have thought about it most days since. I am happy to say it works almost as well on repeat viewing. It is a wondrous film. My favorite of the year so far and will be tough to top.

Nightmare City

A very silly and nonsensical movie about fast zombies (sort of) and the chaos they bring to an Italian city. It has inconsistent special effects, cheesy acting, very little social commentary and a ton of gore. I liked it. It’s a blast.

Ben-Hur
★★★★ Watched

Much like The Ten Commandments, it feels like I watched parts of Ben-Hur every year growing up. I don’t know how my family had time to watch both on I presume Easter but you know, miracles happen. Also like The Ten Commandments, I don’t think I had ever watched Ben-Hur from start to finish as an adult. The runtime is a hindrance and is certainly padded out but when Judah Ben-Hur gets rolling, it’s tough to top. The chariot race…

Very cool design and full of creepy shit. Does a good job of keeping things secretive. Kane Parsons is super talented. I wish it didn’t peter out near the end. Argh.

This is much more subdued than the subsequent Bronson/J. Lee Thompson movies would be. While there is some violence, it’s pretty tame with a much bigger focus on story and character than cheap thrills. Now, it’s not the most exciting story but the cast is great and you don’t get to see 70’s Bronson attempt to be charming very often. It’s a decent little crime flick overall.

Green Snake

I have very little idea what the plot of Green Snake is but when the visuals are this good, it doesn’t matter a ton. This is a wonderful looking fairy tale of love, religion. humanity, reptiles and loss. The story specifics are secondary to the vibes and the vibes are great. It doesn’t hurt to have two of the most beautiful actors on earth playing the snakes either.

Dredd
★★★½ Rewatched

I’m not quite as into this as a lot of people seem to be. Dredd is very serious for such a silly concept and the digital effects can be wonky. However, it certainly doesn’t skip on the ol’ ultraviolence and there are plenty of visceral thrills. The 4K discs Atmos track really gave my system a workout.

Eddington
★★★★ Rewatched

When I watched Eddington last year, there were a lot of things I liked while also having a huge issue with the lack of clarity about its political pov. I still have that issue a year later but Eddington really does convey the insanity of the current world better than any movie I can think of. We are all powerless, internet addicted idiots who refuse to concede that we are these things. Well, not me. I concede it. Hopefully time will be as kind to me as it has to this very funny, flawed and totally normal movie.
