From the moment Finn is visually marked in the opening battle, I knew I was in good hands. Then Poe mouths off to his captors, and it was on. Abrams and Kasdan get it, and not just in some shallow fan-service way -- there's an assured use of the cinematic medium here, to tell a story that both adheres to Lucas's genre grammar and expands it.
