Their friendship felt so honest and pure, especially when everyone else treated Dexter differently because of AIDS. The movie also quietly shows how much fear, discrimination, and homophobia surrounded people with AIDS at that time, even children. And the way Dexter’s mom cared for Erik too made the whole story feel even more human and emotional.
