It was a mess but I kind of loved it? The script gestures at some ideas but doesn’t engage with them in any meaningful way to the point that you wonder why they were included. This film almost feels like a prequel/part one. The editing between plotlines doesn’t really help cohere the narrative in a compelling way.

Whenever I watch or read something about a person who’s unhoused or otherwise on the fringes of society, I always wonder about what kind of person you’d have to be or become to survive. What this sort of living does to a person. This is Varda’s style but I really love the approach of letting the camera give us a look without any prescriptive way about how to feel about this person.

Crazy how endeared I became to those people in only 15 minutes. I think the length suits the scope of the subject but I’d watch a full length documentary on their lives. 

I re-read Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer and read the sequel this year, but I’d never seen Apocalypse Now (cancel me if you must), so embarrassingly I’m only now putting two and two together of how the Hollywood scenes in the book are satirizing it.

This is probably sampling bias but every time I watch a documentary, I always think about why I don’t watch more documentaries? Love observing people as they are. Sometimes there’s nothing more interesting than the truth. 

I saw this film as more like short vignettes all based around tarpon fishing, rather than a concrete narrative. Leaves more of an impression than any specific ideas. 

The true blue waters of the Florida Keys, makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the ocean. Those underwater shots especially are stunning. Super laid back and calm atmosphere to the whole thing.
