I've enjoyed all of the Wes Anderson movies that I've seen. However, In his movies, I've never really embraced the mix of melancholy and humor. This is also the case with The Grand Budapest Hotel, which is admittedly funny and engaging and inarguably a visual masterpiece. It's a solid film overall, even if I kept it at an arm's length.

The stakes simply aren't as high in this prequel as they were in the compulsively watchable Monsters, Inc. The brilliant realization of the character of Boo was not matched by any cleverness within what is overall a fine movie on its own. Also, for most of this movie, Billy Crystal's Mike Wazowski is the straight guy with all of the goofiness surrounding him in characters that aren't as funny as he was in Inc.
