★★½ Watched

There’s a point in Hokum where the jump scares stop feeling like scares and start feeling like spam. Too many jump scares isn’t a number, it’s a feeling, and this one crosses the line early.

Adam Scott goes all-in on being deeply unlikable here, which I get is the assignment, but it makes the whole thing harder to sit with. Just a guy you don’t want to spend time with stuck in a movie that doesn’t give you much else…

Every single one of Quentin’s films is a surreal masterpiece, in one form or another. Each one feels like something I had to have dreamt as opposed to seeing in movie form. This one is no exception. The off the wall detours this already off the wall film takes…just brilliant. He’s one of my favorite directors working right now and I find myself anxiously anticipating each new film starting the moment it’s announced.

Flying Lotus is a true jack-of-all-trades—director, musician, actor—and Ash showcases his eye for gorgeous visuals and ear for sound design. The film is drenched in Mandy-esque neon doom, and the score, by FlyLo himself, is pure John Carpenter worship in the best way.
