Crazy, with plenty of laughs and some wild surprises. The cast is all in on the insanity and director Jorma Taccone keeps the energy going while infusing some of his signature Lonely Island humor in increments.
Black military man vs. White Southern racist police department. Sounds great? I wish it was.
The big climax - which should be the showstopper - falters due to the RZA's handling of the action sequences. Instead of clarity, RZA opts for the annoying shaky-cam + choppy editing method of action filmmaking. Considering that he is a Hong Kong action cinema fan, that's a big misstep that weakens the impact of the finale. That, and deciding to end the film abruptly that left us moviegoers in the screening puzzled.
