I don’t know what I was smoking when I first watched this, because this rewatch made me appreciate the film much more. I feel like Oliver Reeds performance represents this film perfectly. The film is bizarre and unrealistic, yet complex and reflective.
It tackles themes of anger and rage, while never being judgmental or cynical towards its characters. You can feel Cronenberg's personal experience of divorce and custody throughout, and it helps the film feel more like a cautionary tale of how much horror and damage can be done without proper help.
