Who cannot steal a shape that means deceit?

Who: Ashton & closed
When: Night of April 16th to night of April 17th
What: Executing a plan
Where: Quiet corners of the Barge
Warnings: Violence, body horror, character death, brief mentions of cannibalism, brief mentions of gore, implied self-injury

Objectively, Ashton thinks, they've been very good the whole time they've been a resident of the Barge; she's been her unpleasant self, certainly, but as far as violence goes? Absolutely saintly. It's the amount of nonviolence she would've utilized routinely before her first death, back when she didn't even know how to throw a punch, how to hold a knife, how to bite down at the right angle to break bone.

...and this isn't who she is anymore. It's not. She's not meant for this. Who is she trying to fool? Is Ash so grateful to get to exist that he can let himself live this way, and pretend to everyone — tell the lie to everyone's face — that he's still a person who deserves this? He can't stand it. He has to break it. Given his skillset and his limitations, one way to do this is easier than others.

If they really wanted to get away with murder, they'd just eat the bodies — not as if they haven't done so for years — but they don't aim to get away with it. Ruin's the only thing they've ever been good for, accidental or not, so all they need to do is reinforce that fact fresh in the minds of everyone else.

Step one: design a few new faces. Someone who does not exist, but very reasonably could. This isn't necessary — it's a level of misdirection, and who knows if it'll even matter — but it's entertaining. It's enrichment for her! Isn't that the important thing.

And step two: determine victims.

Closed to Norton
Norton Folgate is their first order of business. Ash isn't entirely sure if monitors get an actual notification when their charges are slaughtered, though assuming they don't is a tad too laissez-faire for even her tastes, and there's no need to spoil her fun right at the beginning.

But he is, give or take, a mortal human man. (As far as they can tell, anyway, and they've been wrong before. But nothing they've seen has too-clearly indicated that he might not die as simply as any mortal might, which does make things considerably easier.) He has certain areas of the ship he tends to inhabit at night, not always accompanied by others, and he does have certain tastes.

It's a very easy face to design: boyishly handsome with a mess of curly black hair, scruffy, with a bit of a biker vibe. (In fact, Harvey de Luca probably wouldn't appreciate her using his face as the basis for an angler lure to murder a man, but the two of them never much got along. Sometimes it's the little things, like knowing someone you don't like would be quite pissed about what you're doing with his appearance.) He burns a bit of vitae to get some living color into his cheeks: not something he normally does, but not as if it's much of a resource drain.

And then he goes hunting. At this time of night, this time of the week, Folgate should be around... there.

Closed to Steven
Now that that little bit of unpleasant business is out of the way and Folgate's corpse is also, unceremoniously, out of the way, on to the rest of her agenda. For a minute she thinks about it: isn't it maybe a little uncouth to kill a teenager?

Hmm. Well, yes, probably. However, she doesn't actually care, so that's enough of that kind of thinking.

Teenagers tend to respond a little better to teenagers, so this face is Steven's age, maybe a little younger; wide-eyed, hair in ringlet curls painted in a riot of candyesque colors, a scattering of diamond scales on the face and arms. And an ugly gash on one arm: something that would need medical attention and soon, on a living being. He seems like a good kid. Eager to help. It's such an abusable trait that she almost feels a little bad taking advantage of it by pretending to be injured in this stairwell.

Almost.

(She doesn't feel bad about the blood sweat. It helps sell the lie, and it means she doesn't even actually have to injure herself to get some appropriately-placed blood smeared around. It's still beading in her eyelashes, though, and she always hates when it does that.)

Closed to R
There's a boy working in the library who seems not quite undead, a quiet sort, who's been here only a few weeks — easy prey. Ashton spends enough time in the library that they've been keeping an eye on him every now and again; though it's never a sure bet, they haven't seen him display any particularly unnatural abilities that might mean he would do such rude things like 'not die when she tries to kill him'.

This face is a too-skinny woman with a bleach-blonde bob (dark roots showing, of course, it doesn't look like a good dye job.), eyes so dark they're practically black, and the same sort of pallor as R's got - just a few shades off from Ash's natural corpselike complexion. Late 20s, maybe. All those piercings in her ears are actually bone, which she knows is a silly little detail when they'll be in contact for less than five minutes -- ideally, less than two -- but that was mostly just playing around to see if she could make it look real.

She catches him on his way back to his cabin, after a library shift; no one else is in this hallway right now, so when she stumbles into him hard enough to knock them both to the ground, it should be believable enough. She's just so distracted, is the thing. Anyone could've done that to someone if they were distracted enough and in some sort of a hurry.

Closed to Max
Objectively this is outside of their guidelines for selecting targets, but those are Ash's own self-created guidelines, and there's some sort of sick amusement in killing the last person to perform mass slaughter. The fact said man is their warden's soulmate's husband's inmate is a bonus.

Maybe not a bonus, though it's something, alright. Keeping it in the extended family? Hm. No. Not that. Sheehan being alerted will be annoying, but they're expecting the corpses from last night to be found soon, so adding in an extra level of complication is just fine.

(...killing two members of the library staff wasn't on purpose, but maybe it's how she's showing her appreciation for the important services they provide. By providing the important service of reminding them they could be murdered for no reason at any given time, and maybe they should think about that some more.)

This is a backgrounder sort of face they're wearing: a guy who blends into a crowd. Absolutely no one of note. Hell, even on the Barge there's probably at least five other guys who look kind of like this, which is why hanging out in this hallway focused on his communicator shouldn't raise a single bit of alarm.

Closed to Sokie (+ John, eventually)
If Ashton wanted to get away with it, really get away with it, he'd try a little harder. A human body is much easier to bundle up into someplace it shouldn't be when it's not all in one continuous piece. But he aims to be caught.

Ashton, for her part, has his legs kicked up in a common room all the way across the ship from where he killed Max less than an hour ago. The Barge is only so big, and those little cat legs can cover distance exceptionally well. Who, him? Involved in murders? Please. He's busy reading a treatise on magic regulations that definitely comes from someone else's world.

...She's probably given it enough time for Sheehan to find the corpse by now. Hm. What next, then? The clock is ticking. Serial escalation would demand that the next victim be someone closer to home than poor Max, if she really wants to be dramatic about it. Does she? It's not unappealing. But who would -

Oh. Oh. Alright, then. That's... an idea she can't look away from.

Ash doesn't want to do it. She knows she will; she's already pulling out her communicator and messaging Sokie: "Are you busy right now?" Tone of voice: curious, almost-open, with the insinuation there's something she wants to say but maybe isn't comfortable with.

She doesn't want to do this, she likes Sokie, but that has nothing to do with how efficient it would be in creating the desired effect and how likely Sokie is to let Ashton get close enough. That's the only parts that matter. Everything else is just window dressing in the end.

inthepink: (HOLY moly!!)

Lets KILL! THAT! BOOOOIIIII

He's on his way down from the pool from his shift, so his curls are damp and he's wearing a water-spattered singlet, that means the pink gem in his stomach is more visible than usual through the semi-opaque cotton.

But when he sees another youth collapsed in the stairwell, he lets out a small noise of panic before he vaults over the last stair railing to get down there faster.

"Oh, crap--" He skids to a halt next to the new kid, putting an arm against their back immediately and moving to cradle their injured arm. "A-are you okay- what happened?" There's nothing but sincere distress when he looks back at Ashton.
inthepink: (Are you......... okay?)

[personal profile] inthepink 2025-04-19 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I-it’s okay-- there's an infirmary here, just- just hold on-!"

Because he bends down abruptly, and the hand on Ashton's back suddenly wraps to cling to their shoulder, her knees get swept out from under her and Steven has picked her up princess style. "It's just a couple of decks up! You're gonna be okay!"
inthepink: (Should I be concerned?)

[personal profile] inthepink 2025-04-19 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh- o-okay, um-"

He's still holding her, but instead he'll start carrying her and moving downstairs. "I- m-my cabin's downstairs, and I can go find a doctor while you stay safe there, is that- I-I know a warden doctor, actually, Dr Bashir, I'm sure he'll be happy to come down to help you out."

And it's a damn good thing for Ashton's plan that his hands are full of her or he'd already be calling Bashir.
inthepink: (Grrrrrreeeeeat)

[personal profile] inthepink 2025-04-28 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay! Great- I-I'm on level five, so just- hold on, we'll be there real soon."

Mostly he's focused on trying to avoid shaking them as much as he can, while he totters down the stairs. He's surprisingly strong, even for the stocky teenager he appears to be (and while he wishes it was his normal strength, he's managing just fine).

But it also means his hands are full, so when he does get to his own cabin door on level five - well, he can't elbow-fumble a round doorknob open. "Hey, can you- would you be able to get this door for me?" Like he can't just punch a hole in his flyscreen to do so.

pharadyne: (is it really?)

[personal profile] pharadyne 2025-04-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Norton leaves the lounge late and is going for a quick stroll around the deck so the night air can clear his tipsy head before heading to his cabin. It never works and he always goes to his cabin just as flushed and slightly inebriated as when he started, but it makes him feel stone-cold sober knowing he can walk a circuit around the deck without stumbling, swaying, or weaving.

Also, he often meets people on deck and he likes meeting people, so when he sees a dark-haired stranger he shifts his path to greet him.

"Oh, hello, you're new. And cute. I'm Norton Folgate, pleased to meet you."
pharadyne: (smirk)

[personal profile] pharadyne 2025-04-19 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Norton grins and flutters his eyelashes slightly at the return compliment. He holds out his hand in a gesture halfway between a handshake and a lady offering a hand for a kiss.

"York? Like the city?"
pharadyne: (cute)

[personal profile] pharadyne 2025-04-30 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
His smile widens as York kisses his hand. It's a test of sorts, although there's no correct answer, but Norton uses it to assess what sort of person he's dealing with and what sort of dynamics might be on the table. A kiss on the hand is always a promising start.

"I'll graciously pretend you answered 'yes' then. Unless you'd like to tell me the real story."

Here's the thing about Max.

Max trusts no one.

The whole 'backgrounder' face they're wearing? Completely the wrong take for keeping him off his toes, because Max only somewhat trusts the people who've proven to him that they aren't playing a long game prank or who've genuinely stuck their necks out for him and Tried with him. This includes a very small number of people and they're all pretty distinctive.

So Rando McBackground has an eye on him. But he can't help that he's only as fast as a human being as he skitters by and as much as he's creeped out, he's not allowed to start a fight or kill anyone just because he doesn't like how they make him feel. He promised.

...that might change after this, though.
weirdnecro: (and moaned)

[personal profile] weirdnecro 2025-04-17 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Busy? Not especially."

She's surprised. She hadn't heard from Ashton for a few days, wasn't sure what Ash would have wanted. Help with John? Wanting her company? It was...odd.

But not odd enough to shut Ashton right out.

"What, did you want to hang out or something? What's up?" She was in her workroom, staring at another piece she was working on. A ring, for Erskine. A healing spell, for an emergency.
weirdnecro: (As he pulled up his trews)

[personal profile] weirdnecro 2025-04-18 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Something you want to show me?" There was a gentle huff. "Ash? If you just want to hang out, you can just say that. I don't mind."

She moved to stretch slowly, feeling the kinks ease in her back. "Where do you want to meet? Or where are you? I'll come and find you."
weirdnecro: (And pray we get there soon)

[personal profile] weirdnecro 2025-04-19 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
That made her laugh. It wasn't one of her dry chuckles either.

"Of course you do darling dear."

She was getting up, offering John (or his dancer) a blown kiss as she left the cabin.

"But I know which place you mean, and be down real quick. Quicker if no one is using the elevator."

He does notice her coming, but doesn't expect to be stumbled into with quite so much force. The act is more than enough to knock him off his feet, sending him to the floor with a sharp exhale of air as he lands hard on one elbow and feels a dull pang of pain shoot up his arm.

Oh, that's interesting.

R pulls himself towards sitting up, trying to put eyes on the person who ran into him. He doesn't even look annoyed, just... kind of perplexed.

[personal profile] keephersafe 2025-04-27 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Y... yeah. I'm all right."

All right enough to start pushing himself off the floor as well, using the wall for support. He's a little winded from the impact but it's nothing he can't shake off pretty easily.

That tingling in his elbow is interesting. He rubs it absent-mindedly with the opposite hand.

"A-are you?"
keephersafe: (75)

[personal profile] keephersafe 2025-05-05 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hm?"

He had barely even realised he'd been focusing on it. He nods and lets his hand drop. "Mm, f-fine. Just... landed on it."

It will probably bruise, but he won't even notice how sore it is until he knocks it particularly hard against something.
