Thirty-sixth Song - Infirmary announcement
Vincent will probably elaborate on the infirmary response to recent events. In the meantime, I'll simply say that the infirmary will not permit experimentation on any patients while they are in our care.
And this seems like a good time for a reminder that if you have additional concerns or wishes, we keep files of medical directives, and we adhere to them strictly. Please reach out at any time if you have needs or preferences you want us to honor.
You can tell us things like
whether you prefer magical or nonmagical healing
who you would like us to notify or entrust with decisions if you are incapacitated
whether you would prefer to be treated somewhere other than the infirmary
any existing medical conditions or needs
whether you prefer to be healed with or without scars
if you do not want to be treated at all unless you are aware and able to consent
And this seems like a good time for a reminder that if you have additional concerns or wishes, we keep files of medical directives, and we adhere to them strictly. Please reach out at any time if you have needs or preferences you want us to honor.

[ He's certain this is about the Christopher thing - really, everyone's blowing that WAY out of proportion. But this also does feel a little bit like seeing a sign that says 'this building is now lice-free.' Glad to hear it, but now he's REALLY concerned about the previous state of the building. ]

Not that I've ever heard, and I've been on the Barge for six years, half of that as an inmate and half as a warden. That was only included in response to yesterday's discussion, from someone not on the infirmary staff, about experimenting on incapacitated passengers.
People deserve to know that it won't happen while they're in our care.

[ Why did it need to be spelled out??
Darling lets out a small little chuckle before,]
Look, I'm sure you meant well, but this is like when you get the email reminding people to not listen to the CD-ROM that makes your ears bleed. Some people think "great, that's a wonderful piece of advice!" Most people start to wonder who's now in the hospital.
[ This is not a universal life experience and yet Darling is talking like it is. ]

People come from a lot of different worlds with a lot of different expectations. For instance, I don't know what an email or a CD-ROM is, so I definitely don't have the cultural background that goes along with where you're from.
Also, I'm not good enough with people to know any way to be reassuring other than straightforward and honest. [She is too autistic for this; blunt honesty is the best she can manage.]

Well for future reference, if something isn't an immediate or possible danger, there's no need to bring it up. It'll just make people worry when they don't need to.

You don't have to pretend like everyone doesn't know what you're talking about. John showed me what all of you said to him, and if you want to say things like that about people, you should do it to their face, not behind their back.
I'm not creepy, I don't not care about people, and I don't see people as objects.
I'm asking questions and trying to get answers, answers that I don't get why none of you have even tried to get for how long you've been here!
[Didn't he just get told by his friends yesterday to stay off the network? Of course, but man is he even more upset today than he was yesterday.]
I'm sorry I didn't put details on my consent form, I've never made one before, I didn't know you're supposed to do that. I'm sorry that I assumed that someone like minded would be okay with me getting a few readings from some harmless electrodes, I was correcting my behavior.
But why anyone thinks I want to hurt people, or that I'm scary and dangerous when what I want is data as simple as what you might get from a normal check up so I can understand processes we all go through without any consent and it's fine because the Admiral does it?
I don't understand. I don't think I can understand. You all suck, and I don't trust any of you either.
Re: Audio
What I said was that you spoke of asking for consent as if it's an annoyance and an inconvenience, and that attitude is concerning to me. Especially on a ship that houses a number of people who have been experimented on against their will.
Re: Audio
If you're speaking for the infirmary, the staff did. Direct quotes. Your coworkers.
I don't care if it wasn't you, it happened and If John hadn't shown me, I might have come to you for help when I shouldn't have.
Hospital staff should know better, do better.
[And welp. He's going to hang up. Good bye. Gonna go cry under his bed now.]
Re: Audio
[She waits a long while before she sends a follow-up message, still calm. Maybe he'll be calmer too by now? She isn't betting on it.]
I can't control what other people say. I, personally, did not say anything behind your back that I wouldn't be willing to say to your face. Even if John hadn't showed you. It just hardly seemed likely to be a productive conversation right then given how worked up everyone was in response to your announcement.
[Especially Christopher. Ulla has no idea how to handle this much emotion. It's exhausting.
And she's actually more worried about him having heard the things John said to her rather than the reverse; she hopes several minutes of him trying to convince Ulla that his inmate is, in fact, a danger, doesn't do any harm to their relationship. Just as well if all the bad feeling falls on the infirmary staff rather than his warden so Christopher has that relationship unsullied to fall back on.]
As for the infirmary, we're all concerned about the people on board who have trauma related to experimentation, some of whom have spoken with me directly. That's the only reason I even mentioned it here.
But it has no bearing on the way I, or anyone on the staff, would treat you if you were a patient here. There's not a single person on this ship we wouldn't help, if they consented to it. I've offered to treat people who killed me, my inmate, my family members. That was reluctant, but I did it without hesitating. You, on the other hand, I wouldn't be reluctant to care for at all.
[Private] If you ever change your mind and decide in the future that you trust a specific member of the infirmary staff enough to treat you, but don't want to come into the infirmary itself, we're always willing to come to you.

You ignored mine.
Re: Audio
I haven't. I've never even had you as a patient, Trevor.
Has another member of the infirmary staff ignored your wishes, or are you holding us responsible for the actions of everyone on the ship?
Re: Audio
Re: Audio
[There's a sigh, but her voice is even.]
I can't control every person on this ship, Trevor. And other people pulling you back from being stranded in death during port is not at all the same thing as someone on the infirmary staff treating you against your will.
Especially since we don't post announcements of people's medical wishes. They're not ours to share. No one outside of the infirmary knew what you said to me until you repeated it publicly here.
You're being deliberately misleading.

Appreciate you doing this.
[A beat passes.]
And in case it's in question, I don't want to be experimented on unless I'm in on it.
[Not that he thinks she would think that, but best to put it in ink.]
Re: PRIVATE
Thank you for confirming that.
And I would never let anyone do that to you under my watch, Jasper. We're banning it entirely in the infirmary, anyway. Would make too many people feel unsafe here.
Re: PRIVATE
If you need anything, let me know.
[Not that he has any idea what that might be; he's just putting out a blanket offer.]
Re: PRIVATE
I don't know. I'm tired. The most helpful thing today was Malcolm trying to distract me with an art project but then letting me lay on the floor for awhile instead.
[At this point, Hjerte, who has been mostly letting Ulla handle conversations on her own today, confiscates the communicator and switches to voice.] Do you want to meet us at the Enclosure so she can lay in a forest? Tree limbs are prettier than Will and Malcolm's ceiling.
[Still nearby, Ulla chimes in, a small hint of amusement creeping into her voice:] I could walk or run. I don't have to stay still. A forest sounds nice, though. I'd need to transform.
