Once again I used
Oh well. ( Read more... )
There are problems dating this story. My FFN join date was Oct 1998. Star Wars Chicks, according to fanlore, didn't exist until March 1999. I distinctly recall already being head-deep into OT Star Wars, especially the Luke side of things, in 1998-1999. I think I think this story happens a lot earlier in 1999 than it probably did. I used to write fic in notepad and save as .txt, despite many computer changes since then, the earlist date modified on a txt file in my old Star Wars folder is July 1999. There are also problems with that. Also on this deep dive I discovered some school assignments from 1997 and also what might be the address list for invitations to my bat mitzvah, I can think of no other reason for me to have this list of names and addresses, nor why I have it even with that reason for me to have it. At one point, I think around 2003/2004, I had a massive computer failure and had to get everything out through DOS and so that capped file names to be like "ALITTL~1.DOC" and no I never renamed any of them back to their full names, so this is a journey of discovery. -- okay I've got some Q-the-star-wars-character in my homework folder, last modified date December 1998, yeah, who the hell knows. But this does work, I know I was heavily on StarTrek.com and various Star Trek sites before I got into Star Wars.
So the next time I'm in the district, I track down Vasily Petrov at a warehouse right outside of Hassadar. There are machines in there that simulate a ski environment. There are Space TV Screens on the wall that show scenic scenery. There are--
--a fully created, fully funded business plan for opening a ski resort in the Dendarii Mountains, which will employ only people who have lived on the mountain since the Cetagandans left.
"I told you to leave it to me," Vasily says, smiling.
"They aren't going to believe you," Remus Lupin says.
He's probably right but Dudley says, "how do you know?"
"I don't, but I can guess," Remus Lupin says. "I met them at James and Lily's wedding, and I've heard you and Harry talk about them. I've met people like them before. They're going to ignore everything they don't want to acknowledge."
And they certainly didn't do a head count on the train at the beginning of this year, and if they did, they didn't care that they were missing students who should have been there.
No one, Harry realizes slowly, is going to notice if he's not on the train.
And, Harry realizes a blink after that, Harry now has a place in Hogwarts where no one can get to but him.
Ah.
This changes things.
He tells Ron and Hermione -- because they would notice -- and then slips away in the chaos, down deep into the Chamber Of Secrets.
Question: What's one of your favorite shippy moments for your ship? Why do you love it?
But it's a good thing Ivan came along to have sex with Gregor, because Gregor goes a little wild around the eyes during one of the functions and then says to Ivan later, "you don't think I'm a sadist, do you?"
Ivan gapes at him. "Is that a trick question?" he asks.
"No, it's not a trick question!" his Emperor positively shouts at him.
"If you're not a sadist, I'm not sure why you're sleeping with me," Ivan says.
Gregor slowly deflates down onto the sofa, so that was clearly the wrong answer.
"He's making a man," Ethan explained, sounding very long-suffering. Victoria wondered if he and Damiano were a couple. "With blonde hair and a tan." Thomas and Victoria both realized abruptly that they were blonde and tanned, and one of them was a man. "Yes, it's a sex thing," Ethan added.
"Uh," said the virgins.
"You can put your tentacles wherever you want," Ethan offers and Damiano turns a uniform shade of purple to match his nails, his tentacles shrinking down and multiplying. Ha, Ethan knew he'd like that.
"Yeah, okay," Damiano says, a little breathless with the abrupt change. "Yeah. Good idea."
"You're still going to keep your hands to yourself," Ethan says.
Barrayarans don't have soulmates. They have souls and oaths and metaphysics, but they don't have soulmates. Duv wishes the whole concept could have stayed on Komarr, where it belonged.
David Galen didn't have a soulmate. He'd had parents and a brother and an aunt. He'd had a planet and given it up.
He still had Westingtown. He still had Sam Westing. He still had everything but what he'd lost.
Sam Westing died in a car crash. Windy Windkloppel died earlier.
Both of them died badly.
Warlock's always known that she's herself and that there's no one to blame for that than her. Except now there is something else to blame. Now there's something very clearly at fault for Warlock Dowling. She never should have existed in the first place. Warlock should be Adam Young. She never should have known that Thaddeus and Harriet Dowling even existed.
Count Vorpatril looks somewhat horrified by the very idea.
"Why do you want to marry the Emperor, my boy?" he asks Ivan, who shifts awkwardly.
"I don't?" Ivan tries.
"Then you shouldn't," Count Vorpatril assures him, patting him on the shoulder like Ivan is six years old.
Ivan wonders if he can switch his oath to someone who doesn't care about him. Probably?
Lan Jingyi had been in the Yiling Mansion. He had seen the dead body on the carpet. He had heard the murmuring of the ghosts all around him. And then he'd heard footsteps and he'd screamed and run.
That was last night. And today, the Yiling Patriarch has been found dead after no one seeing him for thirteen years.

Before she leaves, she gives the ocean one last look. Andromache could still be in there. There's no way to know. And Quynh can't stay here forever.
But they'll find each other again. They have all the time in the world.
"Mom appreciated the life insurance policy," Joe said. Adam eyed the exits. "You know, this explains some things."
Adam bought time with an "oh?"
"Why we could never find any relatives on your side," Joe said easily. "Or find your body."

"I call this corsi-course correction," Jacks spitballs while Chants looks on with hearteyes.
It's disquieting to wonder what the Emperor knows about him. How much of Adam's life is even interesting to someone like the Emperor? The most exciting thing Adam has ever done is skip school until his parents agreed to let him switch. The most exciting thing Sonia's ever done... Adam might be number five on that list, maybe. He's certainly ranked behind the time Sonia cut all her hair off right before the Midsummer Review. Adam hadn't even been dating her yet and he'd heard all about that.
"Don't you start," Ivan threatens Miles. "You also fulfill the treaty requirements."
Gregor's face does something that Ivan interprets as being 'no, because Miles has already committed treason twice and has a huge insubordination problem'. Well, maybe not that last part; Miles has never disobeyed Gregor himself, right? Then that's probably not the problem. The treason thing would absolutely be a problem.
>CordiaCharnoski: I'm just gonna go ahead and assume there was time travel until proven otherwise. No one's been able to definitively place the Raven King in England before 1110. Has anyone bothered to try to find him after?
CordiaCharnoski: In other words, Jonathan Strange has yet to be off the hook for child support.
>LarissaShanberg: Argh. Sure, why not.
When Piotr opens his mouth, it is to demand, with perfect control: "Your son for mine."
Of all the Counts, of all his Generals, Piotr is the only one who knows about the assassination attempts that Serg has arranged. He knows what he's demanding is nothing less than the Emperor's justice. And he of all men knows what this demand means.
Piotr Vorkosigan, of all men, knows what it is to lose.
"I was going to handle that, too," Ezar says.
Ezar Vorbarra was surprised to find that he didn't leave his bedroom. He watched curiously as the room pivoted to young Gregor, who looked properly terrified by the attention.
Negri was crying. Ezar rolled his eyes at him and wandered closer. "You'd think you'd poisoned me, the way you're acting," he chided his old friend. Negri ignored him.
The first sign Joe gets that something's gone wrong is when Casey from the coffeeshop comes into the bar before it opens to ask if he's seen Adam. He's been missing for two days and they wanted to check with Joe before submitting a missing persons report. The coffeeshop people had noticed some guys hanging around the day before Adam disappeared, had Joe seen them, too?
Joe hadn't seen them, but Joe doesn't spend too much time looking at who goes in and out of Beans & Company. He gives Casey his apologies and tells her that he hopes Adam is found safe and sound.
Joe locks the door behind her.
Every so often, someone comes in and says, "aren't you the Dowling boy?" and he has to answer, "the lawyer recommends I do not answer that question" and stare them steadily in the eye until Manager Fred coughs meaningfully.
"Stop being a total asshole to people who know your parents," Manager Fred tells him. War's sleeping on his sofa until he's figured out how to live on his own. Getting his money from the bank hadn't been the hard part. Staring down a stove and trying to make it turn into dinner had needed moral support from friends and family, and he's not got the family anymore.
It turns out you can keep the family through international moves, through bad grades, through no sense of direction in life and a bad goth habit, but you can't keep the family through a surprise younger sister, through a secret family, through "Dad, I'm gay" when the Dad in question decides what the family really needs right now is paternity tests during a divorce fight.
No one wins Sam Westing's game.
Sydelle Pulaski goes back to work. Everyone knows she's an heiress. It's not polite to ask how much and Sydelle doesn't tell. She has her share of the ten thousand dollars for playing and her share in Sunset Towers. She'd like the millions, who wouldn't?
His brother has style. Ye Zun fiddles with the sleeves. It hadn't been difficult to choose an outfit from his brother's wardrobe, but he'd found himself distracted by the photographs and detritus on his brother's desk. Proof that Shen Wei had a life here, a life that didn't include Dixing. Infuriating. Unacceptable.
Still, he won't rush with Zhao Yunlan. How could he? Zhao Yunlan is more careful with him than Shen Wei would ever be with himself. Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei is sure, respects him as a leader of the Alliance. There is the instant connection with Zhao Yunlan that Shen Wei had had with Kunlun. But while Kunlun had loved Shen Wei with all the fervor of someone who knew they could be dead tomorrow, Zhao Yunlan loves Shen Wei like they have decades to learn how to love each other.
Fu You tells him, they are expecting a traveler to come help them. Fu You tells him, the traveler has to take another name. Fu You tells him, the traveler will have to pretend to be Kunlun.
Fu You tells him, kindly, that though the war had prevented anyone in the Alliance from ever meeting Shen Wei's husband, everyone knew who Kunlun and Shen Wei had been to each other. For the sake of the Alliance, for the sake of winning hte war, Shen Wei will now have to participate in this deception. He will have to pretend a stranger is his Kunlun.
He hadn't been in love. It hadn't even meant all that much to him. But he'd liked having a friend who hadn't liked the Vorkosigans. He'd liked having a friend who was different. Sometimes Gregor had felt crazy, locked inside his head, wondering if anyone else ever looked at Aral the way Gregor did. And Alistair had.
a writing thing where, on Sunday, you post six sentences from an unfinished work. It can be a new fic, a new chapter of a WIP, or even something you’re not sure you’ll ever post.
Choose an excerpt from any section (and it doesn’t have to be six sentences) and post it, letting people know what it belongs to or indicating that it’s something you’re working on.
At first, he's just a guy at the bar. Old enough that the bartender doesn't need to card him, young enough that she probably is carding him anyway. He's dressed a little better than most of Joe's usual clientele, but it's subtle. He's not giving off flashy rich boy signs, at least.
"I'm Adam," he says when Joe approaches. "I've bought the place next door."
1) Pick a fic or a scene from a fic I've written.
2) Give me a twist - a different AU, a crossover, a different order of events, genderswap, character swap, whatever.
3) And I will re-imagine the fic for you, using the requested twist.
