Summary: Tying up the loose ends.

What happens with Padma's uncle?

He navigates the politics well and uses the connection without overusing it. He gets invited every year to at least three major events and met his wife at one of them. He gains and keeps Padma's trust enough that when Padma sends Ivan to the Southern Continent for a few months, his son -- Ivan's first cousin -- is there as well. He also successfully manages to not become Aral, aka Padma does not micromanage his career and instead lets him be.

What was going on with Alexander?

Alexander was angry that Ivan got to be Crown Prince without having to compete for it, unlike The Proud Family Tradition Of Murdering Each Other.

Alexander didn't care that he got to be a prince without having to do anything about it, either.

Was Alexander actually going to do anything about it?

On his own: no.

With all the people from Headquarters who want to use him to overthrow Ivan and then puppetmaster him, and who have been preparing for this opportunity ever since Aral Vorkosigan retired: yes.

Does Castor get a happy ending?

Yes! He gets himself discharged from the military, moves far away, goes to school for music, and ends up as a composer. His husband knows he used to be some kind of noble somewhere, but it's not important.

What is the name of Helen and Ivan's uterine replicator daughter?

Astra Nancy Vorkalloner.

Who knows about her?

Kareen did. Padma didn't. Helen's brother thinks Helen is the mother and she got some other donor for the father. The replicator tech, who does not ask questions to which she does not desire the answers, was given both parental samples as being from anonymous donors.

So I just read through the entire set of these today.

Am I correct in assuming that Serg never was born in this timeline?

And that it's the lack of Cordelia's presence that makes the politics feel more reactionary?

I'm glad Castor had a happy life without being either bitter or Richard.

And Helen & Ivan had a kid who is not a Princess, seems like a pretty gratifying happy ending.

So, I have stayed up long past my bedtime for two nights devouring this series. Well done! And all too fitting for a society that reveres Shakespeare to recapitulate the Wars of the Roses, though with a bit less dire ending. Thank you!

I only found this recently (on an occasional skim through the Vorkosigan tag on AO3) and I love the AU -- particularly how partway through it really seems like it's going to be OK, and then, oh no, Barrayar. There are so many great lines here, too.

Padma understands. Aral has protected him all his life. It's Padma's turn now to protect Aral. It's interesting how the pressures of his position have changed Padma from the glimpses we get in canon -- the sudden weight of responsibility and the pressure to save everyone, not just Aral but eventually his children as well. I really did like this AU version of Aral, and the way the story focused on the relationship between Padma and Aral also shows the way Padma grows as a politican, from needing favors to granting them. I also love the glimpses into other figures, like Vordarian when Gregor is arranging Aral's marriage to his sister: An advantageous marriage for his sister will either settle him or will force him into outright treason. Padma will accept either option.. Poor Padma.

One thing I do really love about this is that Kareen gets a much happier life. Not perfectly happy, but so much better than it might have been. I especially love the scene where she tries to persuade Padma to take a lover (and Padma is distinctly uninterested -- I also appreciated the way you worked in different experiences of sex and gender, like Padma's here, or Sonia's boyfriend/husband.)

The other element that story brings out -- that and the one about Aral -- is Padma's ruthlessness, and the ruthlessness of the system that he's both trapped in and controlling. So that in a later story when Alexander is assassinated it's a shock, but not an unexpected one: Padma's children don't have to be assassins, but that isn't true of everyone on Barrayar.

I also loved Kareen's thoughts on her daughters -- it reminded me a bit of Cordelia and her desire for children but also for children who could be free from Barrayar -- which is a separate and more difficult thing.

OK, I am meandering on and this comment is getting super long -- so let me just say again how much I enjoyed this series and the different ways in which things are better and worse than in canon! Barrayar still eats it's young, but differently here.

Loving this glimpse of a future (AU) generation!

I've been devouring, binging this tonight. Mind Blown. This has been an incredible series. As always, the multiple-same-names as canon but not-necessarily-the-same-person confused me enough to have to reread many sections until I Got It. I lovedit, hated it, despaired, laughed, allthefeels. I could quote so much!but then you know what the best parts are already.

( Now to go remember where I put my DW acct info!)
