Thank you, Nia 😭 Vocal support from people matters so much! It's a lot of work to translate what we're doing for fandom, especially now when the fundamental work is so deep down into the protocol.
Like, the "you will be able to swap out payment processors while keeping your account intact"? That's me fighting every day to keep it true, and this 👇 is what that looks like.
To people it's just a puzzling diagram, to me it's jumping on an unexpected call because someone I've been building a relationship with mentioned their proposal for how communities will work on ATproto. So I dropped everything I was supposed to do, and walked them through what we creative communities need from these platforms, including making sure we can walk away.
And if I don't do it, then the "you'll be able to swap out payment processors" gets more and more asterisks and caveats. And success won't be apparent because success means no big company can fuck us up. Success means no one worries. It doesn't directly mean a new platform, it means no one can take what you build on that platform away from you. It means we can walk away from the next Discord without being afraid to lose our friends and spaces. It doesn't "make it", it makes it possible.
I cannot write about it as much because this is what I must use my writing energy on 👇
And we're fixing this! But the tl;dr is that to keep all this possible (and make "the good fight" somewhat sustainable):
- we need money, so @fujocoded can continue doing visible work while I do the invisible one
- and ALSO we need people who can explain why this matters to those who trust them.
Anyway, here's wonderwall our Patreon
