FML

there has been much good today, but also so much bullshit that i'm beyond wanting to scream. sprog-free birthday? haha whatthefuckever.

my blood sugar's low so i'm about ready to slit my wrists. it's friday -- the day before groceries -- so there's very little easy food in the house. i've already eaten about 5 pb sandwiches. no more oj.

spent the afternoon waiting for a phone call so we haven't left the house today -- the only sunny day this week. at least N is getting home early from work today -- at my request. the plan is to hit the veg food fair, but i don't know what's actually going to happen. i just want some alone time with him. the 20 minutes between the kids falling asleep and his needing to go to bed doesn't count and isn't enough. he's been sleeping in the living room and i miss him terribly.

the baby hasn't slept for more than 60 minutes today, when he usually sleeps for 3-5 or more hours. he's had a growth spurt and has nearly outgrown the 3-6 month clothes WE JUST BOUGHT HIM. he's already wearing size 6-12 month socks. he's not even 3.5 months old!

oh, and that awesome sweater I knitted last year? he's already outgrown it. I tried it on him today and it's waaaaay too small. :(

there's so much more, but blah. just blah.

Birthday Wrap-Up

First: Happy Birthday to shbe!

Second: the actual birthday day sucked ASS for me, but not through the entire day. Got to talk to my mom, which was happy-making. Got to talk to my sister, who never fails to cheer me up in her own special way of purposefully sharing all the shit that's gone wrong in her own life. She's sweet like that. optimystik got home and gave me a card and some ginger snaps. The card was suuuuper sweet and perfect, and the ginger snaps are always yummy.

Friday, I took the Smallest down to the Harbourfront for the Vegetarian Food Fair where we met N... and soon after watching food prep porn, I became a proud new owner of a mandolin that actually works (unlike the mandolin N bought me for my birthday last year that sucked so badly we had to take it back). We had a fabulous dinner, got a shirt for the boy, and a few choice buttons.

Saturday, we met up with kuaimao, her husband and their new daughter, and headed off to the market. Got lots of yummy food there, played in the park, ended up back home just in time to put the boy down for his nap. Had a little bit of downtime, and then started tidying because I had a couple of friends coming at 4.

plumjudy showed up soon after 4... and then another friend, whom I hadn't invited, buzzed me. Ah ha! Birthday party afoot! (I had suspected something was up when a couple of friends, who had no reason to remember when my birthday was -- even with the facebook app to remind them, had wished me a happy birthday. Analytical Virgo pieces clues together and is sometimes accurate!)

And then the boy woke himself up, crying in a puddle of pee after only having had 1 hour of sleep. Oh joy. He eventually became less whiny, moved into a normal head space, and then quickly into mania for most of the rest of the evening.

More people came, some had to go early. And then, at about 8, this happened: Collapse )

birthday, baby

At 1:50am this morning, I turned 30 years old. After freaking out about it off and on for the past 5 years, I feel so blasé now that it's here. Maybe it's because I made my goal of having a baby before 30. Maybe not. I don't know... and I don't care, really. I'm 30 now, and I'm a parent. That's just weird.

Change can happen so subtly
and so suddenly
all at the same time.

In baby news, A is now 6.5 weeks old and is 25 inches long. He has outgrown several of his 0-3 month onesies, including a few that he never even wore. We have a long-sleeve onesie that is 3-6 months from the Gap. The Gap marks height on their tags, as well as age, to give a better estimate of fit. This outfit, 3-6 months, is also for 24-27 inches. This means that A is ready for some 3-6 month clothing, despite only being a month and a half. Crazy long baby.

He smiles a lot now, too. *dies* So awesome. Best birthday gift ever: early morning smiles from my boy.

In other news...

I am SERIOUSLY craving chocolate. Right now, I want chokky cake. Or cupcakes. That would do nicely.

I've had an unusual-for-me amount of chocolate in the past couple of days. Unfortunately, I think it might keep A. more awake than we'd all like. I don't like the screaming that comes with "I'm too tired to sleep". Nothing is certain yet, but Imma hold off the chokky for a bit before trying more again. Or at least keep it to a dull roar. Moderation. Yes. That's the ticket.

So, alas, the chokky cupcakes might have to wait until my birthday (which is Sept. 10th, btw. I'll be THIRTY. argh.) No plans as of yet for a party, though. Don't really know what to do about that... *drools over fantasy cake*

pet stress, Take 2

1. Happy birthday crucible!!! See you tomorrow night!

2. The person I was irritated with is not on LJ and none of you know this person anyway. I feel bad for making such a vague statement on LJ because I hate it when people do that and then leave everyeone to wonder if it's directed at them and here I go and do it myself. Duh. Sorry for any stress I've caused! It's not any of you fine people. :)

3. Miko is in the hospital because she is slightly jaundiced, not eating anything but a little bit of tuna (which I only gave her because I thought it was better than her not eating at ALL), and is dehydrated. This is NOT happy-making for many many many reasons. First, I would really like for all of our animals to quit getting sick and for them to be healthy for at least one solid year. Has this happened once in the past four years? No. It's always something and I'm tired of it. I want healthy kitties and a healthy doggy. :(

We have the $ to pay for her treatments for once in my typically poverty-stricken life, so at least that stress is dealt with. I'm guessing another case of hepatic lipidosis (what Bastian had and died from in June) or something closely related. Her belly seems ever so slightly enlarged.

I really don't like leaving her at the vet. I mean, yeah, who would? But aside from that -- I feel like I don't know how to comfort her or communicate with her. She's very... self-contained and reserved at the best of times. Leaving her there makes me feel kinda lost. I feel like I was never able to get really close to her for much of her life. Until recently (meaning in the last 3 or so months), she never even cuddled with me. Lay on my lap, sure, but cuddle while I sleep? Hell no.

Dammit. I just realised that I should have known something was amiss. For the past 3 weeks I've been complaining that the other cats were being mean to her. They did this with Bastian, too. Shit. Well, at least the jaundice isn't horrible. It's barely noticeable. At the same time, if she is having problems with her liver, it's not a given that she'll recover just because we caught it early. This sucks so bad.

I feel resigned to losing her because I feel like I never had her to begin with. This thinking does not please me. :( She is my very first cat. I'll have had her for 10 years in January. I feel like I should feel more broken up about it than I do. I feel abnormally numb and am disturbed by it.

4. Kiska's follow-up appointment is on Tuesday at 5. She's healing quite well and is able to not just go for walks down the street but go for runs around the block and looong walks around the neighbourhood. She hasn't been able to do that with any frequency for far too long. Definitely happy-making.

5. Dr. Toole at Village Gate kicks ass. He itemizes EVERYTHING on the estimate/bill, which makes me very happy. He's really down to earth and has a very good bedside manner. The fact that he is within walking distance, is available after hours, makes house calls, and has no problems with visitation of sick pets really doesn't hurt, either.
