Evergreen, the oldest, fully-operating cemetery in the city, hosted its first burial in 1881. At one time there was a train depot at Evergreen for visitors from the city, and holding vaults nearby for bodies awaiting burial. The brick walls surrounding the cemetery were built in the early 1950's.
When the cemetery opened, remains were moved here from a downtown area near State Street and from the Old City Cemetery. Many of the street names in the cemetery are named for original board members: Daniel, Cummer and Barnett. The first burial was Margaret Jamison on April 7, 1881.
There are over 70,000 people buried in this cemetery. It has several sections for fraternal, military and church organizations and an especially large Catholic section, St. Mary’s. There are two large Hebrew Cemeteries located at the front and rear of Evergreen and Evergreen also includes the old Woodlawn cemetery to the west.
