Evergreen, the oldest, fully-operating cemetery in the city, hosted its first burial in 1881. At one time there was a train depot at Evergreen for visitors from the city, and holding vaults nearby for bodies awaiting burial. The brick walls surrounding the cemetery were built in the early 1950's.

When the cemetery opened, remains were moved here from a downtown area near State Street and from the Old City Cemetery. Many of the street names in the cemetery are named for original board members: Daniel, Cummer and Barnett. The first burial was Margaret Jamison on April 7, 1881.

There are over 70,000 people buried in this cemetery. It has several sections for fraternal, military and church organizations and an especially large Catholic section, St. Mary’s. There are two large Hebrew Cemeteries located at the front and rear of Evergreen and Evergreen also includes the old Woodlawn cemetery to the west.

Call Maria at 733-8352 for more information

Tickets are $9.00 adults if you buy them in advance, $10.00 at the cemetery gate itself, and $4.00 for 11 years old and under. Please note the revenues go to help the Pilot Club's charitable functions in our city.

You can buy tickets at the following places...

Evergreen Cemetery (northside area)
4535 N. Main Street

Girl Scouts Gateway Council Headquarter (westside – off Post St.)
1000 Shearer St.

got space?

This isn't about food, but...

I'm moving up to Jacksonville mid-August to attend the FCCJ Kent Campus, and I need to find a place to stay. Does anyone have a room to rent? Or know of a person with a room to rent? I'm going up on the 14th of this month for an orientation-type thing and will be checking out the area. I really can't afford more than about $300/month. If anyone can help me, please comment, or IM me at Shelleybean414. I would really prefer a room in the Riverside/Avondale area or Central/West Jacksonville, as that is where I will be attending school.

Thanks so much!
PS this is going to be x-posted so sorry if you have to read it more than once!

Hello! My name is Kristelle Siarza, a fellow filipina in New Mexico. I have a favor to ask all the Filipinos in America – can you all do this survey, and can you forward it to your friends and family?! This is major research that will definitely affect the Filipino people, so I need everyone’s help as soon as possible.

Thank you and maraming salamat!

Anybody out there?

It does not look like this community gets much action but I am going to try and see if any of you nice Jacksonvilleian's can help me out.

OK so I have been going to JAX for work a lot over the past few years (I am starting to consider it my second home), and I will be heading back for 2 weeks later this month, again in May, and June, and then possibly September, October and going on into 2005. So I have eaten at every place the hotel has suggested, well almost and everyplace and some I have discovered on my own that looked good and now I am looking for something new, fun, different, local and exciting. OK the restaurant does not have to be all of those things but a nice combination would be great. (I am staying in JAX off of Baymeadow's near I-95 but have wheels to travel if that helps any). And just so you know here are all the places I have been too: Bonefish Grill (this is my favorite), Roy's, Stonewood Grill, Bistro Axe, First Street Grille, Joe's Crab Shack, Hooked on Harry's, Carrabba's, the French Pantry (or something like that), Ragtime, Morton's, Crawdaddy's, River City Brewing Co, Ruth Chris, Don Pablo's, Gator's, the Roadhouse (awful!!! yucky!!! do not go there) so off the top of my head these are all the places I have been to in the past few years while traveling to JAX.

I am not looking for a national chain; I can get them here in Seattle. I do love seafood and I love sushi too any good recommendations for an out of the way seafood place? Where's/What's the best sushi bar in town? I have been meaning to try the Wine Cellar and Bebe's any yay's or nay's for either of these places? Oh and more little thing I do not eat beef. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you can provide me.

Oh one more thing I am also looking for a goo Martini bar, so if you know of any please let me know. Thanks again!
