With all the excitement from this weekend, I forgot to review "Once".
I saw "Once" with my mom. It's currently playing at the Lake Twin. It first opened in PDX at the Fox Tower.
The film is indie and geared more towards the "Art House" crowd, however I believe that those who, in general, are not drawn to indie or art house will enjoy "Once". It opened at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival t
I didn't pickup that the film had started (despite the oh so familiar fox musical intro), because it starts off with the protagonist playing his guitar on a side walk. The viewer quckly meets "Guy", and after an amusing chase scene involving Guy and an asthmatic smoker who tried to rip Guy off, Guy meets Girl (check IMDB if you don't believe me about their names).
It is obvious that Guy and Girl click instantly. Guy fixes Hoovers when not playing his guitar, Girl has a broken Hoover. Girl also plays piano, but can't afford to purchase her own. However, it soon becomes apparent that the two cick musically. Girl then proceeds to encourage Guy in his dreams of putting together a demo.
The movie takes place within a single week in which Guy and Girl find another guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer. Together, the five spend a weekend in a recording studio. Unfortunately, Guy and Girl have a lot of baggage, but you can tell that they are falling in love, or would get there soon with more time.
There is no need to engage in a suspension of disbelief with this film. It's warm and heartfelt, but it's also real. And the decisions made by the characters are fully thought through.
I can't say more without spoiling the ending, but th movie would probably be rated PG if the word "fuck" weren't used as often as it is.
