Captain's Log 0008

Captain Renni Star commanding.

Spent the day taking holos of plants and pestering the Melodians with questions through Tavi. Not as exciting as yesterday, but it was a great opportunity to sample a bunch of cool looking fruits and nuts.

The big trees may be the centerpiece here, but food production seems to happen at ground level, mostly shrubs - although many of those shrubs are big enough to be trees if they were shaped different. Oh, I was right about the big trees being carnivorous, by the way. I think it's what helps them grow so fast and lets them survive until they can reach the canopy and get some actual sunlight. And then when they're full sized it sort of supplements their diet. That's a guess though, I ain't a botanist. What I know for sure is that the Melodians tend them while they're "small" - singing to them and feeding them bits of meat. The Melodians believe the singing does as much for the trees as the feeding does. It sounds like superstition, but I ain't the one to test it and I don't think it should be written off without proof one way or the other.

Anyway, back to the food plants - my personal favorite was this big purple fruit the size of my head. Absolutely delicious. Thin skin, nice texture, very sweet. I asked a lot of questions about how that one was cultivated and they gave me a few seeds as a gift. Not that I'd be able to grow a bush that big in a hydroponics system even if I had one. Or knew how to use it. But I'll keep them all the same.

Think I have enough to get by on, so now it's just the boring part left - writing up the report and sending it back to Unity. Sky's already on the Fauna section, Tavi's working on the Native Sapients section, and I'm procrastinating on putting together the Flora section. Once it's all done I'll put it together, have Tavi edit it because formal language ain't my favorite thing to write, and then send it off.

Unquestionably the worst part of exploring, but it does mean getting paid, so it is unfortunately important.
