I very much do not know what I'm doing yet, just sort of poking around the site.

I've uploaded all my FFxiv and BG3 writes (for better or worse), and generally plan to use DW as a place to cross-post my writing and crafting for now

found this project part done while sorting my stash, no idea when I got it, but figured I might as well finish it since the thread/yarn was all still there (if a touch moth eaten)

this has mostly served to remind me of all the reasons I dropped needlepoint for cross stitch, but at least it's done!

bits of this write just kept scratching at my brain and would not leave me alone until I wrote it, so, here it is

obligatory "please do not judge me for my weird crackship" note 🙏

this will probably make minimal sense if you haven't finished the Arcadion raid storyline

Barely had Rrahna's feet touched the floor by the aetherite when Nonopesa opened the courtyard door and bowed. He took a certain professional pride in knowing the exact right moment for such things.

"Welcome, Mistress Zhwan. You look to be in high spirits today." In truth, she looked insufferably pleased with herself, and neither the large bag swung over one shoulder or the scythe held in her other hand did anything to throw off her proud strut. It was a heartening sight for one who had more often seen her in varying degrees of exhaustion and injury.

Jarexx had been all set to spend his first full day in space pacing his small cabin and panicking. He'd even kicked Sunny out of the room so he'd have somewhere to walk, since the tiger took up nearly the whole damn floor. He'd barely made 5 rounds however when something spiked his adrenaline in a whole new way.

Sunset on the 20th day arrived. All books had been returned in acceptable condition. The copy tag-team still worked frantically, but as the book had never left the library it was not late, and the Book Wyrm graciously allowed them a few extra hours to finish, as they had nearly made it.

Once they had left with their completed book, a final sweep was made to ensure no unexpected guests remained inside. A couple faerie dragons were gently shoo'd out and the great gates shut. The Library again rose up on four legs, a great stone beast, and vanished the way it had come, weaving through the great trees in the dark of night.

The Library did not travel quickly, but neither did it tire. A month or so saw it winding its careful way up narrow switch-backs, so elongated it more resembled a thick wall than a castle. Even the legs were forced into a single file configuration. At the top of the path lay an isolated mountain village. Rarely visited save by the sorts of peddlers that traveled without wagons.

Making little sound, it woke not a single person as it curled around the village, making what use it could find of the limited flat or flat-enough land. Arches rose up to allow passage beneath it both for the main road in - if it could be called that - and the various sheep-paths out.

Once more the gates opened and a flood of kobolds streamed out with their fliers advertising the Library. Although it was anyone's guess how literate a village like this might be. Still, one never knew.

The stop was going well. After the inn's cook had wandered back out of the library, a bit dazed but unharmed, more people had braved the mysterious castle. Most opted for the safe option of reading within the library, as comfortable seating for a variety of body types was provided. A few brave or confidant souls actually checked books out. And a small group of people - of whom the Book Wyrm thoroughly approved - had decided to team up to try to copy an entire book for the town to keep.

It was one thing for the cook to copy out recipes - his main struggle was in picking which ones he wanted to try - it was quite another to copy even a single tome cover to cover in less than 20 days. As the library was open at all hours, they were tag-teaming it, with someone writing around the clock.

Dawn came slowly to the forest, little light filtered down through the canopy above. Yet the world lightened all the same, revealing gray stone and high spires that reached for the branches above.

The castle looked as if it had always been there, built around the trees as necessary. As castles went, it was not especially large, although it dwarfed any building the town could boast, and indeed, was nearly half the size of the whole town.

----

Jarexx had decidedly mixed feelings about stepping onto "his" first ship. On the one hand, it would finally get him away from the viper's nest that was his family. On the other hand, no the fuck it would not, it was only getting him out of immediate back-stabbing range. That wasn't nothing, but all things considered, it didn't feel like a lot either.

For one thing, every godsdamned person on the ship, up to and including the ship herself, would report him without hesitation if he stepped out of line. The Iron Rose was programmed to be loyal to the Family above all else. She would obey him for only as long as he was following orders.

In the dark of night, an enormous shape moves through the trees on four powerful legs. It should not even fit beneath the towering trees of this forest, but it does - rearranging its geometry as necessary. Eventually it finds a place to settle, just outside a town built between and around the forest giants. It loafs like a cat, its legs disappearing beneath it.

It is difficult to make out details in the dark, but the silhouette now seems almost to be that of a castle. On the side facing the town, a great gate opens just a crack on nearly quiet hinges.

"Yip?"

"Yip?"

"Yip yip?"

"Yip!"

The gate opens fully and a flood of small forms rush out. Kobolds, dark in the dark of night, but red scales flash as they dart under lanterns. In remarkably little time, a flyer has been pushed beneath every door in town.

The Wandering Library is in town!

Our countless collection of books may be enjoyed from our many comfortable desks and couches. Checking out books is also allowed, but be aware that late fees will be collected in gold.

Damaged or lost books will be paid for in blood.

Signed

Pulled a few navigation tricks to save some fuel and get us to port sooner. Caught Dew talking to itself on an open mic on the way in. Didn't have its translator on, but according to Aggie it was complaining about the lack of facilities aboard, both religious and scientific. Well, it ought to be happy with what I have planned for this stop then.

Won't hold it against it since it wasn't exactly intended as public commentary, but I wonder if Sky and Tavi will give it a bad time about forgetting to check its comms unit.

Shit, so much for luck. Using the Hyper-jump must have damaged something because when Sky went to tinker with the Sun Room's settings she got a nasty shock. She's ok, fortunately, but the room's seen better days. It's still functional? But since we're so close to Progress she's opted to sleep in the Bunks with the other crew until it gets fixed, and I can't blame her.

She's bounced back pretty fast, but the way Tavi was fussing over her, she must have been real upset for a while. Hell, I would be too.

Talk about luck! Someone set up a Hyper-jump at (8, RQ) and we were able to boost all the way to (7, BA). Damn near to Progress now, and still with a decent fuel tank! Were we headed for Luck instead, I'd be sure to try my hand at gambling.

In other news, I caught Dew coming out of the Cargo Hold this evening. Turns out its religion isn't exactly sun-based, but more about natural cycles in general. It's got a sunset ritual it's been doing too, but that one requires darkness rather than light so it doesn't need to use the Sun Room for that one.

Was tempted to ask it what it felt about Shadow, but honestly I'm a little intimidated by Dew and thought that might be a bit rude. Maybe I'll find out if we ever make port there.

Quiet sailing continues. Walked by a room today and spotted Sky practicing writing Galactic Standard words on her arms with Tavi. Funny how I never considered she'd be able to do that, but a letter's just another pattern, ain't it? She can't write an essay like that or anything, but I can see how a quick hand with "WAIT" or "STOP" written on it could be damn useful in an emergency.

Don't think she noticed me watching, though I didn't stay long. I'm sure Tavi noticed me, but he didn't give any sign of it. Couldn't really see what she was doing exactly, but it sounded like the main difficulty was making sure all the letters were facing the right direction. Fair enough, really.

Captain's Log 0009

Spent the say saying our goodbyes and letting the Melodians to expect more visitors in the future now that the galaxy was aware they existed. Took on a few more food stores because it never helps to have some wiggle room in that regard. Paid for them in... well sort of in promises, but my food budget comes out of the Unity taxpayer's dime anyway so I know they'll get paid with the next Galactic Federation ship to visit. Just complicates things when they aren't currently a part of the Credit system.

Polled the crew for opinions on our next destination. We could go right back to Unity, but we have enough fuel to reach a few other planets as well. The scientists expressed considerable interest in seeing Progress, and we should be able to just barely make that without refueling. Cutting it a little close for comfort, but it's safe, well traveled space the whole way so it should be fine.

Asked Dew if we could maybe set up a makeshift shrine in the cargo hold for it to hold its morning rituals in, but it informed me that the Sun Room was the makeshift shrine and nothing less could possibly suffice. Definitely will have to prioritize installing an actual shrine. In the mean time, I shifted the schedules around so Sky will be on the bridge at that hour instead of sleeping.

Tomorrow, we shall be off!

Captain's Log 0008

Captain Renni Star commanding.

Spent the day taking holos of plants and pestering the Melodians with questions through Tavi. Not as exciting as yesterday, but it was a great opportunity to sample a bunch of cool looking fruits and nuts.

The big trees may be the centerpiece here, but food production seems to happen at ground level, mostly shrubs - although many of those shrubs are big enough to be trees if they were shaped different. Oh, I was right about the big trees being carnivorous, by the way. I think it's what helps them grow so fast and lets them survive until they can reach the canopy and get some actual sunlight. And then when they're full sized it sort of supplements their diet. That's a guess though, I ain't a botanist. What I know for sure is that the Melodians tend them while they're "small" - singing to them and feeding them bits of meat. The Melodians believe the singing does as much for the trees as the feeding does. It sounds like superstition, but I ain't the one to test it and I don't think it should be written off without proof one way or the other.

Anyway, back to the food plants - my personal favorite was this big purple fruit the size of my head. Absolutely delicious. Thin skin, nice texture, very sweet. I asked a lot of questions about how that one was cultivated and they gave me a few seeds as a gift. Not that I'd be able to grow a bush that big in a hydroponics system even if I had one. Or knew how to use it. But I'll keep them all the same.

Think I have enough to get by on, so now it's just the boring part left - writing up the report and sending it back to Unity. Sky's already on the Fauna section, Tavi's working on the Native Sapients section, and I'm procrastinating on putting together the Flora section. Once it's all done I'll put it together, have Tavi edit it because formal language ain't my favorite thing to write, and then send it off.

Unquestionably the worst part of exploring, but it does mean getting paid, so it is unfortunately important.

Hired a couple locals to take me and Sky out on safari to see the native wildlife, after setting up a few mutually understood signals via Tavi. Sky because she's the actual expert on the topic and me because like hell was I going to miss this. Alas, we didn't see shit, although the trip was still interesting. Seems that for all the locals go up and down the tree trunks like they're nothing, they are otherwise not all that arboreal, traveling by ground rather than branch. And I'm fairly certain that wasn't just for our benefit as I noticed that in the city as well.

Planet sighted! And it is very green. Looks to be mostly land with limited water coverage, no visible ice caps. Initial scans indicate a breathable atmosphere and signs of a pre-spaceflight civilization. Looks like Tavi's going to earn his salt right off! Here's hoping they're friendly.

No communication signals that we've been able to pick up, so we'll be dropping in unannounced. Looking for an uninhabited spot where we can land without causing a panic.

- Addendum -

Holy crap are the plants here huge. Finding a landing spot is going to be more challenging than expected. We can't even plonk ourselves down in some city square because the settlements seem to be built in a way that doesn't disturb the trees. Even a shuttle would have trouble finding a place to set down.

This is going to take a while, and I can only assume we've been noticed. So much for the subtle approach.

Sky managed to hit a wrong button on the bridge in the middle of the goddamn night and set off a red alert. Not my favorite way to wake up, to put it mildly. Better than an actual emergency though. She was pretty rattled, so I took over the rest of her shift and told her to go to bed. Fortunately, she's not an empath and couldn't tell how irritated I was. Wasn't really her fault, she's a scientist not a pilot, but I was still grumpy as hell about it. Suppose I'd better fit in a quick lesson on bridge controls before I crash. Not that I doubt your competence, Aggie, it's just good sense to have someone awake on the bridge around the clock, you know?

I am pleased you are following proper protocol.

Heh, I'll cut a corner or two where I think there's wiggle room, but cutting that corner's a good way to get killed out here.

Anyway, on top of all that nonsense, Dew woke Sky up stupid early and insisted on using her room for some sort of ritual. It's lucky she's so nice, I would have fuckin stabbed it. Ok, maybe not. Captain's gotta be responsible after all. But it'd depend on if it knocked first. Seems it's in some sort of sun-based religion though, which makes sense for a plant. And if it's going to be this insistent on morning rituals, I suppose I'm going to have to invest in a ship shrine. Seems like a waste of limited space, but what do I know, I'm an atheist.

At any rate, a shrine would be better than Sky having to wake up at the crack of whatever Dew decides dawn is every morning. Plus the Sun Room's light is too harsh for Dew, who I gather is adapted to low light conditions. It's just too insistent on its morning ritual to care.

Wasn't all bad today though, I managed to find a path that saved us some fuel. And tomorrow, we should reach our destination.
