I always get annoyed by kids who get a new video game and sit right down and start putting in the cheat codes. I think "How fun could that be?" But I've come to realize old people are no different. I am so sick of being in the middle of umpteen projects with a line of people at the reference desk and getting a call from some old moron with a crossword puzzle question. Just wait until tomorrow and get the answer then if you really must cheat! Sheesh.
Right, so I haven't posted in eons. Somehow my job has found a way to make me actually work for a living. So I'll try to be better, but no gaurantees.
We're having a party for Raimi's birthday on Sunday, July 16 at noon. It will be at our house and all are welcome. Let me know if you can make it so we have enough food and all that. If the weather is good bring swimwear.
* Whenever I get out of a car, I get a shock as soon as my hand hits the metal of the door.
* Almost anytime I drive at night, at least one street light goes out as I drive past it.
* When I'm unlocking the safe at work, I chant random numbers in my head in case anyone is trying to read my thoughts. (Like in that Twilight Zone episode)
* I wish on anything and everything, from the first star to when the clock reads 12:34 or 3:33.
* The last thing I say to my husband and kids before we part is "I love you," instead of "goodbye," so that if one of us dies we'll know what are last words were.
* I'm actually admitting all this to people on the internet.
Maybe everyone's seen this already, but I just found it. I scored a 48.8. I'm really more of a nerd than a geek though. If it were a nerd test I would have scored higher. The fact that I just said it proves!
Hey, I'm still around. Very busy and the family has been very sick lately, but we're still here. Sorry I haven't been in touch much lately. Work is kicking my ass so I actually spend work time doing work stuff (concept) and when I get home I just don't feel like being on the computer. But I pledge to be more communicative in the future. Here's the basic recap of my life lately:
Raimi is 18+ months old and still not talking. She was recommended for speech therapy which involves a hearing test. She did not pass it because, naturally, she had an ear infection the day of the test. So we start speech therapy next week and have to get her hearing retested in a month. Other than that she is beautiful and perfect and completely adorable.
Nico has been a handful, but hey, he's 3 1/2. He wasn't doing well in "school" but the teacher recommended moving him up to the next classroom. That starts next week, and ever since he found out he was moving he's been doing better, so I guess the teacher was right. He's just too damn smart for his own good is the problem. That and he's too much like me.
Sherrard High School is one of the suckiest places to work. I really don't know how Chris doesn't just walk out of there. But he's surviving. My job is overwhelming right now, but a lot of the suckiness has gone out of it, so it's not really that bad. I just hate working nights and weekends.
Well, I do need to go do work stuff now, but I'll try to keep up with the journal a little more. I miss you guys.
In the newest Library Hotline are two articles of interest to me. First, the Florida Library Association is boycotting Hillsborough County! Until they recind that stupid "no promoting gay pride" law there will be no FLA events in the county. That means a big loss of bucks. Also, there is an article about Librarians Without Borders (www.lwb-online.org), an group dedicated to providing library access to third world countries who would otherwise have nothing. Not quite my big plan to have all US libraries pitch in together, but definitely thinking in the same direction. Maybe there's hope after all.
I'm reading "Library Hotline," which is a publication that prints news of interest to libraries. It seems that for every article about a library having to close or cut hours because of budget cuts, there's another article about libraries expanding and offering new services. Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow spread all these funds around? Make sure there really is library access for all, insted of none here and more there? Now, I'm lucky enough to be in that second category. We're in the process of building a new library right now. Luckily none of our neighbor libraries are closing, because if they were I would feel very ashamed. But that's the government for you.
Also, Hillsborough County, FL has passed a law that makes it illegal to promote "gay pride." Right now, it's okay for the library to keep buying books with "gay themes" (ie one of the characters is gay), but they can't put those books on their new book shelves because that would be promoting "gay pride." And the Oklahoma House of Representatives just voted 81-3 that all Oklahoma libraries have to restrict access to any "homosexually themed books and other age-inappropriate material to areas exclusively for adult access." What is this? Year of bash the gays? You know, I'm not really sure I want my white children to have access to books that promote black culture as acceptable. And they really shouldn't be exposed to materials that show persons with handicaps. After all, we all know how subversive that can be. (please read the obvious sarcasm here) This just infuriates me. What is the difference between gays and blacks? A hundred plus years of working to overcome ignorance is one thing. Is it going to take that long for our culture to overcome their fear and aversion to homosexuality?
I would say I'm moving to Canada, but new Canada copyright laws make it illegal for Google and other search engines to cache pages. I would say this is taking the idea of copyright a little too far, but we're well beyond "a little" already. You see kids, this is why I don't read the news. I get plenty ticked off just reading the stuff I have to read at work.
Raimi is one. We are having her pictures taken at Sears tonight, and I wanted to take her out for a special dinner before. I was thinking of Chuck E. Cheese or Jungle Bungle, but I decided on Denny's, because this girl loves pancakes more than anything else in the world. (Well, excluding my boobs.) Is that really lame? We probably won't give her any of her presents until her party Sunday, but I don't think she's really going to mind so much, seeing as she can't quite read a calendar yet.
