Even as I'm typing this up I'm in doubt as to whether or not I should even bother. I'd never had any high hopes for this show and predictably I didn't like it very much. It's not a terrible show; it's just not my cup of tea. Very much so. But it's not without its redeeming qualities, I suppose, and besides, I've resigned myself to watching all kinds of weirdness that the Being Human actors take part in. XD
This actually started with a conversation between me and shirogiku about how Smaug got into Erebor in the first place. Like, he would have to smash the roof or something, but in that case, why did the dwarves look specifically for one door? Then we started talking about other weird things (like how did Smaug know Thorin's nickname if he'd been asleep all this time?) and somehow, as if often happens with us, this crack came to be. The story of how everyone in Middle Earth wants one single thing.
If there is one work that might impede Andrew Gower's ascension to the position of Sean Bean 2.0, it's this one. It's silly, it's funny and he doesn't die. He doesn't die in The White Queen either (and we have already established that it's amazing), but at least he risks it. In Murdoch Mysteries, he risks nothing but killing his two and a half fans with chronic cuteness. Not much has changed since January: I still don't watch this show, but I can't really say no to Baby Sherlock. It's an interesting symmetry by the way: he keeps appearing in the fourth episode of the season. Should we keep fingers crossed for 8x04 next year? ;)
I'm feeling a bit under the weather, and I can't write anything clever (or anything at all), so I thought I'd make a list of characters that annoy me right now and are heavily overrated in my opinion. Standard disclaimer: this is very much an IMHO post. Which means: I am not bashing these characters. I have reasons not to like them but I'm not saying they suck or that everyone should dislike them and I am not trying to insult their fans. There are characters one dislikes irrationally, even if admitting their overall awesomeness: f.ex. you dislike the actor portraying them and that interferes with your perception of the character; or you dislike the character's motivation and can't reconcile their action; or it's a character you love to hate. This post is NOT about those characters. This post is about those characters that everybody else loves and you just can't understand why. Perhaps they are very one-sided; their writing feels flawed to you; they are too inconsistent; and yet everyone around you seems to be head over heels for them. Including the other characters in the show. Ever happened to you? Sure as hell happened to me.
Let me tell you about my hated plot device: a cure for vampirism. The Vampire Diaries currently have this story going on, but the further we get, the more I'm becoming convinced that it's bullshit. Which is good because I don't want them to be cured. But let me rant about vampires in general and their attitude to being human.
This post contains spoilers for Being Human series 5, The Vampire Diaries season 4 and Once Upon a Time season 2.
I wonder if Andrew Gower has any idea that some people's default reaction to him (like yours truly) is "CUUUUUTE!" and "D'awwww!" Andrew traditionally breaks his fans hearts and dances on the fragments by choosing roles where he suffers horribly and dies no less horribly or roles where half the time he isn't there at all. Murdoch Mysteries finally put things right. Please welcome: a more or less "happy", Andrew-centric episode!
I don't know if anyone here loves the first two Home Alone movies as much as I do, so feel free to skip this post, but I can't keep quiet because Tumblr once again pissed me off. It's weird because I usually only get riled up about my fandoms. Home Alone was by no means ever a fandom for me, but I think it's safe to say that Kevin is one of the most awesome movie characters ever. Certainly the most awesome movie child. Home Alone 1 and 2 are witty, unpretentious, don't try to leap over their heads, and that makes them extremely cute and funny and just right for the Christmas season.
So, let's talk about Kevin. I saw a post on Tumblr that said this:
Lately it’s been my incredible bad luck, I suppose, to keep stumbling upon various wanks. Fortunately, most of them are not exactly character-related. Characters are usually my sore spot: I can take a lot of TV-show/writer/style/whatnot hate but I tend to feel really bad for the characters, like they’re my friends who have been insulted. That is not to say I don’t have characters that I intensely dislike (I have plenty). But sometimes I can’t help but wonder why exactly people hate certain characters.
But I’m not going to write a long-winded post about it. What I am more interested in is what a character has to do to stop being hated, or if they even should do anything.
