It is all [twitter.com profile] thisisyourfault‘s, er, fault. Back in May, she came up with the excellent idea of using the twitter medium as a writing exercise to get stories down to 140 characters. I’ve given it a couple of goes, and never got around to doing what people much more sensible than me have been doing: archiving them on a blog. So, here’s a few random snippets of brief fanfic I’ve been able to scrounge from Twitter’s unreliable archives: Behind the cut you’ll find very brief fanfiction for Animorphs, DC Comics, Discworld, Fray, LeonardoLeverage, Revolting RhymesPirates of the CaribbeanQuantum Leap and some roleplay continuities.

1. I forgot to mention this yesterday, but I have booked coach tickets to Leeds for the weekend of the Fantastic Films Weekend in June; [livejournal.com profile] theyorkshergob and [livejournal.com profile] matgb have offered me their sofa (actually, Mat hasn't, but I'm assuming Jennie's told him by now) and my return ticket on Megabus cost a total of £5.50 including booking fee. So, y'know, if I can't get the weekend off work or realsie I can't afford the ticket, I still haven't lost much.

2. [livejournal.com profile] silveronthetree recced me a fic! And, yes,I don't read fic, I don't care. I'll make an effort for Being Human/Discworld crossovers: Inter-Universe-Travel Incorporated by [livejournal.com profile] 7tree_hugger.

4. Another six hours at the Science Museum today!

I have hayfever for the first time. This doesn't make me happy per se, but knowing it's hayfever instead of a huge worm living in my left nostril and making both nose and eye run is comforting.

I'm rather relieved, actually, that everyone's talking about the cast for the upcoming movie of Avatar: the Last Airbender, and talking about my greatest concern above all: The cast is all white.

For those not familiar with the  source material, Avatar is a superior quality children's cartoon based around four separate nations with very distinct personalities, based separately on Tibet, China, Japan and Inuit cultures. The disparity is obvious in the art and character of the architectural styles; the behaviour and culture of the people, and the design of the characters. Although written by white Americans, and voiced by a largely white cast, the story takes place in a culture almost devoid of Western trappings (let's just say I couldn't see any) and while there are some pale-skinned characters, none of them are Caucasian in any way.

So, casting an all white, largely blond collective in the movie adaptation is a big deal. It's been mentioned by Avatar fans I know, and I even checked the fan communities that I'm not a member of, because active fandom's not my thing. There's a stink being made.

Which is, yes, a huge fucking relief, because when the Colour of Magic was cast and I was put out by the Discworld's only significant non-white character being cast as a white man, the fandom as a whole (or at least, the part I'm exposed to) dismissed my comments as mad rantings.

So more than anything else, I'm just happy people are being vocal. And I don't plan to see the movie.

trelaliLi made me do it!

1. Comment on this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.
I was assigned F

1. Melaka Fray. (Fray)
The first graphic novel I read and still one of my all time favourite characters. Mel is hard and scrappy and streetsmart and cool, but under all that is a loving, hurting damaged girl who's lost in her life until a big red demon gives her a direction. Even then, her direction is tied up to that one mistake she made.

2. Eddie Fyers (DC comics)
Let's be honest - I didn't even notice Eddie the first time I read the early Green Arrow - he was great when Grell was writing him, but I really feel for him under Dixon's pen - hard edged, no nonsense,  gun happy and everything that Ollie doesn't want to admit he contains the potential for, he's a great foil for Ollie and his relationship with Connor is just cute. My bullet vibe is names Eddie for him.

3. Ford Prefect (Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
One of a very few things the recent movie didn't cock up was the casting of Ford, but David Dixon will always be my Ford. He's smart, but self involved, loyal to his friends but easily distracted. A real Bohemian.

4. Big Fido (Discworld)
Chief barker of the Dog's Guild. An insane, red eyed vicious fluffy white poodle. Haunted my imagination for months.

5. Francesca Bruni (Casanova)
It's a very silly movie indeed that gives Giacomo Casanova a monogamous love interest, but then a movie that knows it's silly enough to quote Monty Python with a straight face would have won my heart if Francesca hadn't already. A proto-feminist, she's so wrapped up in how clever she is and how she's just as good as a man, that she forgets to actually like people, until she meets Casanova. She dresses as a man (poorly), fences (and cheats), in order to justify her possession of a sharp wit and philosophical bent. And when she declines to become an actress because she knew she was a great writer, I knew I'd end up playing her.

Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] discworld:

So
, said [livejournal.com profile] rowanberries, who wants to go and see Mort: The Musical? It might have Death singing

Well, with a promise like that, how could I resist?

And it was amazing: the songs were amazing, the young actors (from the Youth Music Theatre) were outstanding: even with Death predictably and absolutely stealing the show, the human characters all held their own and had me squealing loudly in delight. It had obviously been written and staged by people who loved the source material very very much, and stayed absolutely true to the spirit of the book. Some of the lyrics were so Pratchettesque that I found myself wondering if the book had actually been written in verse and I hadn't noticed.

It was the first stage show I've seen of the Discworld, and I loved the way Death was done - a very talented young actor hiding in a cape behind a fully articulated seven foot skeleton, one hand of which had interchangeable props, such as a scythe, a sword, and for one of the most dramatic scenes, a spatula.

If you are at all anywhere near Guildford, Surrey, UK, I highly recommend you go and catch it this week: the last night is this Saturday, so you'll have to be quick. If you can't get to see it, you can see pictures of Death and hear a couple of the songs at the composer's website. And of course there's this video of Death in action

This is the most appropriate this icon has ever been.

So there's a meme going arond where people list their 'FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME' list of fictional women. For me to do this would be a little superflues now, wouldn't it?

But I'm going to do it anyway. I bet you're not surprised at any of these.

The sad thing is: I really am so excited to see [livejournal.com profile] slutbamwalla post - he's one of those people I love dearly but as a) I don't ever talk to people of my own volation and b) he never updates LJ, I feel unconnected to right now, and if you think you're one of those people too, you probablyare - that I feel obliged to do this meme just because he tagged me.
List ten fictional characters you would have sex with (in no particular order) and tag five people to do the same.
  1. Kaylee Frye. Because - well, who wouldn't?
  2. Melaka Fray. I just would. I like punkish girls
  3. Adam Munroe - he has the practice! I'm not saying he's not a bastard!
  4. Dinah Lance - I don't care if she's straight - she's awesome and I love her
  5. Tara Maclay
  6. Will Turner. OK, STFU, he's a good man, and pretty as hell.
  7. Elizabeth Turner - maybe or maybe not at the same time as (6)
  8. Samuel Vimes
  9. Robert Angier - well, mostly 'cause he looks like Hugh Jackman.
  10. Hakoda of the Southern Water Tribe - oh, come on. He's gorgeous.

*flops*

West to east jetlag is the worst ever, even if I did sleep on the plane.  The red eye flight was less than half full and I had a full four seats to myself, across which I stretched out and listened to Stephen Briggs read Monstrous Regiment* in between naps. Now, however, my pelvis is killing me and I need to take a bath.

My sense of entitlement is still rankled by US Airways charging for their headsets, and I intend to not fly with them again, but I imagine I'll change my mind when I book my flights for Rocker Bing's wedding, and again choose to sacrifice 8 hours of comfort  for the sake of a hundred or so.

Holiday-wise, now that's what I'm talking about. I am relaxed, refreshed, confident, loved, and ready to face the world again: I have motivation. I have a reason to do what I'm doing, and I have a destination in mind for my life. I'm not a fan of saying goodbye, but the knowledge that every time I do, there are fewer to be said in the future: that's OK.

Discworld News © PJSM Prints:
Folks,

I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke".

We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o)

Terry Pratchett

PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell. I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

Good afternoon, Livejournal! How are you today? What's that, you say? Xenophobic? Oh dear. Luckily I can't report you for hate speech, because LJ's policy only lets me report for hatred of a particular ethnic, religious or ethnic group, so you're safe there.*

OK, OK, I'll stop being facetious and give you the answers to the question meme. Still taking questions there, BTW.

What obscure canon should everyone know? )

Who's your favorite Discworld character? )

This post today brought to you by Deepest Sender on [livejournal.com profile] matgb's recommedation. It seems funtionally similar to Semagic, but it's much slower, location doesn't auto fill in, you have to maunally type in lj users, tags are stored online and therefore take ages to load, and there's no scrapbook support. I'll be going back, I think.

*No, seriously, Flist, STFU with the kneejerk bigotry already.
innerbrat: (disapproval)
I'm not crazy, right? There is something fundamentally wrong with casting a white guy to play Twoflower, the most prominent character to originate from the Counterweight Continent: the Discworld equivalent of Imperial China (with some Japanese elements thrown in).

I mean, yes, AFAIR, the only specific physical description of Twoflower is that he wears glasses, but he also comes from a great insular empire situated overseas, in the region known as the Aurient because of the abundance of gold. From the Agatean Empire in fact, which is so insular it denies the existence of a world outside the wall that surrounds it.Where the tea ceremony takes hours. Where the ruling families are the Hongs, the Sungs, the Fangs, the Tangs and the McSweeneys, all jostling for dominance under a God Emperor. It's not supposed to be a subtle analogy.

So why is it OK to cast Sean Astin as what appears to be a stereotypical American tourist in a role that was written as a stereotypical (Japanese?) Asian tourist? I've heard the arguments that an Asian tourist might be viewed as offensive or un-P.C. or whatever, but you know what? No. No it's not OK to say this major well-like character might ruffle the wrong kind of feathers if we cast him with the ethnic background he was written as, so we'll make him white.

Twoflower is not the only chromatic character in the Discworld novels, but off the top of my head, he is the most prominent such. The next in line would be Lu-Tze, then I think you're down to Pteppic, Mrs Gogol, and various characters from the Agatean Empire, Klatch, Genua and Djelibeybi. Of course, there are plenty of trolls and dwarfs for Pterry to talk about real-world racism with, by drawing parallels to speciesism.
Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because -- what with trolls and dwarfs and so on -- speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green
Witches Abroad
Which is all well and good, but that doesn't mean you can just wipe out all human races on the Discworld. It doesn't say there's no racism because there's no diversity! (Incidentally, all dwarves, werewolves and vampires described are apparently white. Typical fantasy fare, though.)

How hard is it to find an Asian actor to play one of the most likeable characters in the whole series?

It looks to be another Hogfather: looks great, probably feels right, but with casting and acting decisions I just can't get my head round (Nope, still not over Marc Warren's Willy Wonka impression nor the auditors with inflections.) See also: David Jason as Rincewind.

In better news, I'm about halfway through Making Money and I love it! The clockwork 'thing' hasn't made an appearance yet, and Moist's internal voice still sounds a lot like Vimes, for reasons I haven't figured out, but my favourite part so far has to be this Angua moment (no major spoilers) )

I have Making Money!

I haven't read it yet, because I had to finish the website I promised [livejournal.com profile] amurderofcrows, and icons for [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh's parents weekend (and a plot character for that game - what's the Fandom equivalent of an OOM - OOF? Also, apparently I now have more Heroes characters than active Discworld ones. Huh.)

The signing was great: met up with [livejournal.com profile] sumerianhaze for queuing fun. Because we were in the first 20 or so, Pterry was in a good mood when we got to him. He didn't comment on my first edition Interesting Times, which was a shame, but still, it was nice. :)

Then there was Wagamama's, with lots of sake and delicious plum wine. And Daniel picked up the tab because he's luvly beyond belief, and is presumably hoping that when I get a job I'll actually stand my round, or something.

Picked up Runaways #28, read it, cried a little, came home.

Now I'm finally cooking my dinner >_>

How are you?
