I'm not crazy, right? There
is something fundamentally wrong with casting a white guy to play Twoflower, the most prominent character to originate from the Counterweight Continent: the Discworld equivalent of Imperial China (with some Japanese elements thrown in).
I mean, yes, AFAIR, the only specific physical description of Twoflower is that he wears glasses, but he also comes from a great insular empire situated overseas, in the region known as the Aurient because of the abundance of gold. From the Agatean Empire in fact, which is so insular it denies the existence of a world outside the wall that surrounds it.Where the tea ceremony takes hours. Where the ruling families are the Hongs, the Sungs, the Fangs, the Tangs and the McSweeneys, all jostling for dominance under a God Emperor. It's not supposed to be a subtle analogy.
So
why is it OK to cast Sean Astin as what appears to be a stereotypical American tourist in a role that was written as a stereotypical (Japanese?) Asian tourist? I've heard the arguments that an Asian tourist might be viewed as offensive or un-P.C. or whatever, but you know what? No.
No it's not OK to say
this major well-like character might ruffle the wrong kind of feathers if we cast him with the ethnic background he was written as, so we'll make him white.
Twoflower is not the only chromatic character in the Discworld novels, but off the top of my head, he is the most
prominent such. The next in line would be Lu-Tze, then I think you're down to Pteppic, Mrs Gogol, and various characters from the Agatean Empire, Klatch, Genua and Djelibeybi. Of course, there are plenty of trolls and dwarfs for Pterry to talk about real-world racism with, by drawing parallels to speciesism.
Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because -- what with trolls and dwarfs and so on -- speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green
Witches Abroad
Which is all well and good, but that doesn't mean you can just wipe out all human races on the Discworld. It doesn't say there's no racism because there's no diversity! (Incidentally, all dwarves, werewolves and vampires described are apparently white. Typical fantasy fare, though.)
How hard is it to find an Asian actor to play one of the most likeable characters in the whole series?
It looks to be another
Hogfather: looks great, probably feels right, but with casting and acting decisions I just can't get my head round (Nope, still not over Marc Warren's Willy Wonka impression nor the auditors with inflections.) See also: David Jason as Rincewind.
In better news, I'm about halfway through
Making Money and I love it! The clockwork 'thing' hasn't made an appearance yet, and Moist's internal voice still sounds a lot like Vimes, for reasons I haven't figured out, but my favourite part so far has to be
( this Angua moment (no major spoilers) )
